Just returned from an extremely welcome empty Cineworld in Bradford having just watched The Amazing Spiderman with my 8 year old son. I don't care what people have been saying about this reboot, we both enjoyed it and Emma Stone was much better in the "Mary-Jane" role than the truly awful Kirsten Dunst. And I thought Andrew Garfield was excellent as Spiderman too. Definitely gonna pick this up on BD when it's released

Chronicle I liked it. Really inventive use of the found footage conceit, even if it it got stretched to breaking point several times - the cute girl blogger filming everything being the worst example. Think the first flying sequence was the highlight. I'd watch it again for sure . . .

THE BOX - Pretty weird for a mainstream sci-fi movie (I'm being reductive, but that's essentially what it is). Big ideas about human relatedness, responsibility and empathy play out within an unfolding which looms large with menace. It doesn't always work, and comes across as a weird blend of subtle and clunky, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. BLOOD CAR - I've got it in my head that I despise horror comedies, although I can think of a few good ones without too much effort. This one works, is made with a certain amount of flair for a poverty row indie, and features some quite uncomfortable scenes (particularly towards the end), so didn't annoy me too much. THE SQUAD - I really wanted to like this, as I'd heard good things. I found it difficult to get into and can't figure out why - it's well made, has a well developed oppressive mood, claustrophobic atmos, a certain intensity... maybe it was just the mood I was in. Reminded me of 'The Thing' without a monster ie. isolated military types fall victim to their own bunker mentality in, erm, a bunker (sort of). I could see the quality, but maybe need to re-watch. |
