CHROMESKULL: LAID TO REST 2 - A servicable sequel to what I thought was a pretty good latter day slasher. It's quite gruesome without tipping over into any kind of transgressive territory, and features the familiar device of "horrible killer backed up by murder organisation for the psychopathic rich". OK, maybe that's not quite standard, but it does carry a bit of 'Hostel' badness in with its general milkiness. Anyway, 'Chromeskull's back and he looks pretty ugly before he gets his mask on. I really like it when murder and deformity walk hand in hand. Although when MTDS mentioned 'Tiny Tim' a few posts ago it brought back painful memories of being told I'd look great if I played ukelele with a mental floppy perm by a Charles Manson looklalike standing naked in front of a broken mirror in Leeds pub back room on an awful mushroom voyage. This film is better than anything that happened to me that night, but now I've got ****ing gout in my ankle.

If you're looking for a little something for the weekend I'm sure your collection of ritual sacrifice themed porn will do the job alongside your own little ukelele.
Despite my aristocratic bearing, my demand for a jewel encrusted stana stairlift has been refused by the cake eating scum who claim they're my landlords, but at this point I am well and truly hobbled. I made the ridiculous error of getting totally lashed last night (as you can tell from my previous post) in full knowledge of oncoming gout attack, so I only have myself to blame for full on agony today. Bit crap this is happening pre-middle age, but hey. Sorry, I know I shouldn't use this forum to whine about my minor health problems, bring back the horror.

I watched this last week but haven't got round to reviewing it yet.

I didn't think it was as good as the first, however it was different to the majority of modern day slashers and also followed directly from the first film. I was pleased the gore was still of a high standard and the film makers gave us some pretty inventive kills.

Gout's amazing, i had it once a few years ago.

The pain is incredible, even something such as a bed sheet gives the impression of someone sticking a flaming hot knife into your big toe.

This afternoon will be filled by Mutiny on the Buses and Holiday on the Buses perfect Saturday afternoon viewing the amount of times I've watched them I should really pick them up on dvd, even though they are always on. I should really crack open some of my new blu-ray's this evening.

I know people can't really imagine Reg Varney as a sex symbol, possibly watching it in recent years but I find him rather attractive.

Back in 1967, he was the first person in the country to use one of those newfangled ATM machines!

THE WARRIORS - What a great movie. Been ages since I last saw it, but it hasn't lost any of its appeal. Set in the neon wilderness of 70s NYC, a place which you imagine felt perpetually on the brink of some kind of apocalypse. The look, feel and sound of the film sum up that era so well, at least in my head. Takes us through endless grey subways and litter strewn alleyways where the gangs thrash it out to a Suicide-esque / Carpenter style soundtrack. The closing scenes in Coney Island seem weirdly biblical, particularly the ones on the beach. Excellent.

THE DAY - I really liked this, despite its mixed reviews. It's a survivalist horror set in a landscape populated by roving cannibal gangs in pursuit of the few remaining norms. A bunch of cannibal resisters hole up in an abandoned house and end up in a seige. Yeah, not very original, but it's very good. It's really downbeat and grim, about as uplifting as a 'Kids of Degrassi Street' box set. That's what makes it great. I felt really emotional watching it today, and although that happened to me recently when I saw 'The Brood', normally I'm pretty detached from flicks like this. Dig a world filled with brutality, pain and the comfort of a swift death? Recommended to all nihilists.

BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO - A film about men trying to make women scream. They don't really succeed. OK, it's about more than that. This is really excellent. It's such an odd film, an adventure in sound before anything else, but also a witty genre deconstruction, a homage to the slippery world of movie making and then again something really abstract. I could sum up the plot, but that's not really what the film's about, or at least not what makes it special. A gauche wallflower arrives in Italy from blighty and subsequently loses himself in a Kafkaesque maze of prima donnas and corporate paranoia. Then again, I could say "Sound is the real Supernatural" and not make it any clearer than that. This film takes us into the mystery that lies behind a sound recorder's knobs and dials. I'll never look at my 4-track in quite the same way ever again. Anyway, 'Berberian Sound Studio' is really, really good and I recommend it unreservedly.
