I'm a fan of Michael Parks too. He has that edge and voice that makes you take stock and listen. It was an inspired choice to make him a preacher.

Regarding the ending, didn't he initially want to do it (sans cop-out), but the budget would have been too much?

After the dreadful Cop Out comes Red State, the film you didn't think Kevin Smith had in him, everything about this film is right, John Goodman is insanely good, Michael Parks is even better!

It's not an easy film to watch, it's very intense, I felt very uncomfortable during the sermon scene, it's hard to listen to that stuff when you really don't believe it, but that's not to say it isn't convincing! Kevin Smith proving once again he's a master scriptwriter, it's not quotable like his back catalogue but the monologues are awesome.

Recommended.

Addendum, regarding the ending, it seemed to work better on this repeat viewing, I still hate the whole idea of the Rapture, but there would have been no other way to end that thread of the story other than killing everyone in the house. About the scene with the agents at the end, and the comments about prison rape, it does, and doesn't seem out of place in the film, I'm suggesting that it doesn't because in my opinion, these guys are pen-pushers and are supposed to be unlikable, it's not in tone with Goodman's character and his actions throughout the film, but he doesn't condone or even react to the comments, I didn't find it particularly jarring.

I liked the ending too, reminded me of the similar one to Burn After Reading - a witty summing up of the previous nutty 90 minutes

Red State remains the only KS film I've seen Think it's to do with my aversion to 90% (approx) of American comedy . . .

Most Kevin Smith comedy is of the 'slice-of-life' variety and not really the old-school SNL stuff that you see all the time - if you're able to think about the words being said you'll probably appreciate it - start with Clerks, if you hate that you wont like the rest.

It doesn't have anything to do with watching them in chronological order, but Clerks is definitely the way to go as it's all about dialogue and substance over style. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best film Smith has made and will particularly resonate with someone who has worked behind a till at some point in their life.

Gotta agree with this. Always loved Kevin Smith movies but after working in retail, Clerks is my all time favourite movie. What I wouldn't give to do the things that Randall does!
