A truly odd film which, besides being a real head-scratcher, is a lot of fun, all the more so for pitching its weirdness against a sickly seventies TV movie-esque backdrop.
SATANIC ATTRACTION - More top flight weirdness from an ex-hardcore director who hopefully wasn't looking for mainstream acceptance with this unhinged and frankly pretty awful number. It's awful in all the right ways, though - porno-flat acting, gratuitous gore and random bursts of strangeness fill out this tale of a radio host whose show (basically her reading out a rubbish serial killer story) inspires a series of 'real' murders involving a Satanist and his undead sister. Mesmerisingly bad, and I wish it were available on something other than knackered VHS.
SLEEP TIGHT - Superb offering from the director of 'Rec'. A downtrodden concierge dedicates his existence to reducing the happiness of those around him by various covert means - he focuses on a happy-go-lucky young lady whose perma-smile and happening lifestyle pretty much sum up everything he hates about the world. What follows is gruelling and truly disturbing, with some really uncomfortable scenes, especially those near the end. It's pitch perfect in terms of pace, ambience and tone and, for me at least, ferments a really tense
atmosphere of foreboding. Really recommended. | I've just ordered Sleep Tight, cheers Frankie. I hope you're on a roll as you recommended The Sleeper as well.
