What Films Have You Seen Recently?

X - The Unknown (1956)

I've always had mixed feelings about this film. Hammer's second foray into horror, but with heavy swathes of typical fifties science fiction. Ignoring the allegories of the Cold War and Britains standing in world power at the time, that it and the other two films in Hammer's sci-fi trilogy played around with (The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) and Quatermass II (1957)). X - The Unknown plays as an outstanding horror thriller with some extremely creaky Britishness thrown in. We swiftly go from flat caps, kitchen sinks and boys playing out, to melting faces and a wonderfully effective oozing, amorphous mass of a creature destroying all in it's path.

Hugely enjoyable, yet terribly of it's time. Recommended.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, Stanley Kubrick, MGM US dvd)

Gets shorter every time I watch it. And how anyone can puzzle over what it "means", when it is all in front of you cough (especially if you've read The Sentinel etc...)

But then I have watched it about 25 times

More Larry Cohen. It's has a very stupid and unfrightening premise (killer baby) some how it actually works and is disturbing and creepy in places. 7.5/10

How did you get on with Anthropophagus? tis a bit....stately cough. Absurd more fun etc....Buio Omega is his masterpiece though....

PACIFIC RIM. Fantastic monsters verses robots film grafted on to a simple tale of heroics and redemption. The boy MTDS and I spent a good hour knocking the shit out of each other after watching it. Hooray for violence!

I've been getting manlier with all these action films lately!

1. The Family - A great De Niro movie - lots of violence and laughs!
   
   
2. In A Colt's Shadow - Another Spaghetti Western, however this one feels a lot like an American Western, rather than Italian. Not the best of the genre, but still fairly enjoyable - 2/5
   
   
3. Near Dark - A fantastic Vampire film with the ever brilliant Bill Paxton. Not as good as The Lost Boys or Fright Night, but still a vampire classic. - 3.5/5
   
   
4. Face/Off - I hadn't seen this film in ages! John Woo, Nicolas Cage & John Travolta make for a brilliant action thriller. Not quite what I remembered - 4/5
   
   
5. Cobra - Hell yeah! Probably my favourite Stallone movie. It's just so damn cool. The aviators, the car, the one-liners, it's great and so underrated. - 4.5/5
   
   
6. End Of Days - Arnie Vs. Satan! How can it get any better than that? It doesn't quite have the magic of Arnie's 80's movies, but it's still entertaining - 2/5
   
   
7. Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell - Such a classy yet gory Hammer Horror! Peter Cushing is incredible here as Dr Frankenstein. I love his intro especially. It's a very well told horror story, with an especially solid first half. Love it!
   
   
8. First Blood - First time I've watched any Rambo movie (for shame!) and I loved this. Definetly not what I was expecting at all. 4/5
   
   
9. First Blood: Part II - Rambo heads back into war for another action packed film, with a big body count, lots of great kills and loads of knife action. Loved it as much as the first and it's easy to see how it spawned so many imitations. Though I couldn't help but think of Hot Shot: Part Deux all the way through! - 4/5
   
   
10. Wrinkles - A VERY touching and heart-breaking animated movie, with the voice of Martin Sheen. It tells the story of several elderly characters in a care home, dealing with their coming death and loosing their minds. It has a lot of laughs in here, but some very touching and emotional moments too - an excellent film well worth watching.
    
    
11. Rambo III - A bigger budget doesn't mean a better film. - 2.5/5
    
    
12. Rambo - Now this is awesome! Rambo is at his most hardened here with so much gore - brains, blood, guts being blown apart all over the place! It's a lot grittier than I expected too, especially the scenes of newsreel footage of be-headings, murdered victims, etc. - 4/5
    
    
13. Eraser - Yet another Arnie movie! This is another one of his most overlooked movie that's very entertaining. It has so many stupid, STUPID moments (Arnie beating up a CGI croc!) but you can't help but love it. It feels very 80s - 3.5/5

15. Terminator 2: Judgement Day - Arnie's back! Possibly the greatest movie ever made, watching this again it's more like a sequel-remake as it's basically the same plot with two terminators! Still, it's a classic movie with some fantastic unforgettable moments. The nuclear explosion still freaks me out. - 5/5
    
    
16. Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines - I remember this movie being total crap, however re-watching it again it's actually a very worthy addition to the series. Sure, the new Terminator is a bit lame compared to T2's but she does have some great tricks, especially the remote-controlled abilities. Amazing action set pieces too, especially the crane chase. - 4/5
    
    
17. Revenge For Jolly - A film full of cameos, such as Elijah Wood, about a couple of guys seeking revenge for the murder of their dog. It's pretty silly, but there's lots of killings and it has a nice dark comedy take to it.
    
    
18. Batman And Robin - Oh yeah, I went there! Arnie stars as Frost in the most hated Batman movie of all. I actually really liked it. Sure, it's total nonsense and it's super cheesy but I wish modern superhero movies were a little more like this, instead of taking it all too seriously. Great fun - 3.5/5
    
    
19. The Return Of Shanghai Joe - The DVD box set I have seems to have made a mistake, as the sequel to Shanghai Joe and the original are under the wrong title on the menu! Anyway this sequel that I watched before the original is full of great action and some laughs from the 'comedy' but its a bit meh. Klaus Kinski is in it however, which is a nice touch. You can definitely tell this was made during the decline of the Spaghetti Western genre - 1.5/5
    
    
20. Shanghai Joe - The original version this time! This is more like it! As the Spaghetti Western began to dwindle and the kung-fu genre grew, the two combined to create this bad-ass crossbreed. I was surprised by how much gore there was in this film - an eye is pulled out of it's socket, a hand sliced off with a sword, a heart torn out and plenty more. The plot follow Shanghai Joe, a Chinese fighter in the west, taking out baddies that get tougher and tougher. Klaus stars here again in a fairly small role as a scalp-cutting cannibal which Joe must kill. Excellent movie - 4/5

First Blood is the best of the Rambo series and Part III is definitely the weakest.

But you can't seriously believe think modern superhero movies should be more like Batman and Robin??? The third worst film in the history of cinema!!!

I haven't seen He's Just Not That into You, but I've seen The Love Guru, which is truly abysmal and has almost single-handedly destroyed Mike Myers' career.
