Demons (JESS FRANCO) Francos attempt at crafting a film along the lines of Ken Russell's THE DEVILS see's a convent and some local aristo's get cursed by a witch they have tortured and burned at the stake. Soon things get nasty and also more than a little sexy as the curse takes effect. There are so many scenes of semi-naked nuns wanking or enjoying a little Sapphic pleasure that its almost unreal. Even knowing Francos work this really goes OTT in its 118 minute running time. I watched this with a friend over a curry. His girlfriend is fairly understanding, she walked in mid way through LAST HOUSE ON THE BEACH right on the slow-mo rape scene, but even she was starting to wonder when EVERY time she walked in the room there was a wanking nun on the TV. Made all the worse somehow by Francos obsessive zooming in and out on the action and focus on crotch shots. I almost wonder how poor nigel wingrove gets any work done with this film in his collection given his predilection for nuns! Once you get past the whole wanking nuns thing, the film is one of Francos finer efforts. It looks f*****g gorgeous and the use of location and costume is first rate, the story is actually interesting and manages to be fairly fresh and original in its approach to the subject of possession and witchcraft. The Devils is still a better film, but credit where its due this is a surprisingly well crafted piece of cinema that Franco fans should seek out. Warning though, its region locked. |

Beserker: Hells Warrior (Paull Matthes, 2004) Safecracker UK dvd. The 2nd film I've had in my hands with Craig Sheffer and Patrick Bergin this week (Merlin: The Return being the other), if i'm honest if it's a love story spanning 1000 years, I'l stick with The Fountain , though the bint (Kari Wuhrer) did look rather fetching in her "scientist" garb cough.

I have to admit to dozing slightly after the opening....... AAAAnyway, two that I forgot to post ahem.. The Gladiator (Abel Ferrara, 1986) Hollywood UK dvd. Wooden doesn't quite encapsulate Ken Wahl's "acting" "style" really. Nancy Allen turns up as the totty. Rick Dees plays a sleaze. There is some plot about revenge, but all I could really take from this was the sheer cackhandedness of Wahl's vigilante avenger. Though it did focus slightly more on the amorality of the whole "taking the law into yr own hands" schtick...for a while..... Gnomeo & Juliet (Kelly Asbury, 2011) E One UK dvd. Stafam plays Tybalt. I need help. "do I look like a begonia?" Line of the film haha.

Japanese Film Festival Hamburg
The Japanese Film Festival in Hamburg opened on Thursday for its 15th edition. I popped along yesterday evening for a few hours and saw three films. Tokyo Shutter Girl Three Japanese film directors interpret a Manga book that follows a Japanese high-school girl who learns about life and people through her experiences in the school camera club. School Girl Complex follows the trials and tribulations of a group of Japanese school girls who belong to their school broadcasting club as they fall in and out of love (with each other). Gun Woman This was the European premiere of Gun Woman with the director (Kurando Mitsutake) and star (splatter-gore favourite Asami) in attendance. The film is ridiculous over the top fun as a mad surgeon rescues and trains a drug addicted female assassin to infiltrate a secret bunker in the middle of the U.S.'s radioactive waste dump to kill the necrophilic madman responsible for his wife's death. I will return to Hamburg again this afternoon for more Japanes film fun. |
