You should really put it at the top of your 'to do' list as it's one of the best horror films in the 21st century and one of the scariest films I've seen in the cinema. When you see it, make sure you have the curtains closed and the lights off!

Faces in the Crowd. (2011) Mila Jovovich stars as a teacher who survives a horrific attack from a serial killer. When she comes around in hospital she realizes she has "face blindness". A condition where facial features change each time she loses sight of them. Meanwhile the police are on the trail of the killer who is again closing in on the teacher. A real oddity, Faces in the Crowd plays the unusual game of changing everyone's faces as Jovovich sees them, the viewer has to work out along with her who she is actually talking to, her friends, husband etc as they are different people each time she looks away. It must be a quite nightmarish sceneario in real life and many of the nightmares are played out here in a few gripping set pieces. The only person whose face stays constant throughout the film is the investigating cop played by Nip Tuck star Julian McMahon. Why? I won't say just in case anyone decides to check the film out after reading this. It's not a perfect film by any stretch of the imagination and the concept is probably better than the execution if i'm honest. Much of the film plays out in classic giallo fashion and i'm sure had this been an Italian film released in the seventies starring Nieves Navarro it would be looked on today as a classic of that genre. As it is in the 2010's, it's a barely known direct to dvd thriller that surely deserves a wider audience. |

I really like Doomsday. I think it's real problem to most people is that it isn't straight horror like Dog Soldiers or The Descent. It's a real mish mash of genres and styles and i feel that probably works against it in the majority of viewers eyes. |

Black Angel ba1.jpeg ba4.jpeg ba3.jpeg ba2.jpeg Just watched this short (25 mins) film that was released with Empire Strikes Back on it's initial release in cinema's. It came to my attention while reading through some old Cult labs posts, I'm sure it was Dem who was asking what it was called. Anyway I saw ESB on it's original release but couldn't remember this but then i was only about 6 at the time. Black Angel is very slight and minimal, it basically follows a knight who returns from the crusades to find his home overcome by sickness and family gone. He then sets of wandering across the lands and ends up almost drowning but is saved by a mysterious maiden who is under the control of a black knight, he vows to rescue the maiden by killing the knight. That's about it really but i really enjoyed it, it's got an Excalibur type feel to the atmosphere (although being PG has no gore etc.) and to me came across like a visual poem with its eerie feel and soundtrack. The landscape looks beautiful (Scotland i think?) and the scenes with the black knight are quite striking, he is a supernatural being and is quite an imposing presence. Apparently Black Angel has been lost for years and is one of those films that has stuck in peoples memories since when they were kids, i can see why it could enthrall and inspire a young mind. My thing that always stuck in my head since a kid was the public information film 'Apache' which totally traumatised me when the teachers showed it to us at primary school (the sadists) Anyway if you remember this from being a kid or are just interested it is available cheaply on Playstation store and iTunes (maybe other places too?). I Liked it and would recommend it if you like Excalibur/80's fantasy films. Recommended 8.5/10 (nice atmosphere but wish it was a full movie)
