Re-Animator and Ginger Snaps;

Mr. Gordon's movie is a classic and looks amazing in HD courtesy of Capelight releasing. First time watching Ginger Snaps and I have to say it's deadly. Both female leads were excellent. Watched it on DVD as I don't own the region A release on Blu. I was told to avoid the sequels at all costs. I probably will

I quite like the Ginger Snaps sequels, neither are as good as the first but decent all the same. The third film is set in the 19th century if I remember correctly.

Personally i really enjoyed all three.

MARK OF THE DEVIL
Michael Armstrong's legendary shocker looks absolutely gorgeous (or should that be GORE-geous? ) on Arrow's blu ray. Having not seen this for years, I'd forgotten what a cracking soundtrack this one has. Great interviews make this a superb package all round.

STAGEFRIGHT
Saovi's giallo / slasher finally arrives on blu ray. It's a lovely looking print and has some excellent extras. Hoping to see some more releases from Exposure Cinema.

Don't Open the Door! (1975)

As a follow up to Brownrigg's 'Don't Look in the Basement', 'Don't Open the Door' loses some of the scuzzy charm of its predecessor, yet the director's trademark off-beat menace still remains.

'Door' deals with Amanda, a young woman who witnessed her mother being murdered as a child who travels back home to look after her elderly sick grandmother in her home, wherein she is terrorised by a maniac who has secreted himself somewhere within the sprawling house. Amanda is subjected to increasingly more frequent perverse phone calls (Brownrigg missed an opportunity here in not pre-emptively (and quite aptly) naming his film 'Don't Answer the Phone' - itself of course being made five years later by Robert Hammer) and slowly begins to lose her grip on reality and her sanity.

The central role of Amanda is played to decent effect by Susan Bracken, and the old, empty house plays to the film's strengths by maintaining a creepy, unsettling vibe. Like 'Basement', 'Door' also has its assortment of odd supporting characters, most of which ooze sleaze from every pore, albeit not being as crazed this time around.

There is certainly a sense of (unintentional?) restraint at play here in some respects - or maybe that was just the impression I got - but 'Door' despite being a bit of a poor cousin to 'Basement' and predictable to a degree, is still plenty of stylized fun.

Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain (2003)

A mish mash of the Sawney Bean legend and the customs of Halloween / Samhain. Evil Breed is a film populated by porn stars with OTT gore thrown in, or in Jenna Jameson's case - pulled out.

The release i have is the cut version i believe running at 78 minutes. I'm not even sure there is a full version anymore due to legal wrangling by the producers and distribution company. However it's still ridiculous gory fun as various characters come to very messy ends - witness Chasey Lain being cut in two, the aforementioned Jenna Jameson getting sliced and diced on a table and one male character having his intestines removed via his anus, not to mention the poor naked girl with her dead baby hanging from her body. To be honest if this is the cut version, what exactly is the uncut release like?

Some of the acting isn't that great, although Bobbie Phillips holds the film together whilst she's in it. We get a fairly informative Hallowen 101 and that's about it. Legends, lore and gore.
