Love on the Dole (1941)

Not the usual in Cult Labs entertainment, but I know a lot of you like vintage movies and I'm sure almost all of you like Deborah Kerr! Now I have to admit, it sounds much more depressing than it actually is on the back of the box. The story follows a working class family in the 1930s Salford who are struggling to make ends meet while the factories are shutting down and thousands are being laid off. Handouts from the government are thin on the ground and our lead protagonist has to face reality by the end and do something she doesn't want to do!

I really enjoyed this one, it's a great character study and some good performances to keep you hooked for 100 minutes! One for the fans of gritty and realistic vintage British films. This one was apparently banned on initial realise for being too grim haha!

Great review Dem, and interesting that you make the Robbe-Grillet comparison as Egg is definitely a film for the more patient viewer and one who enjoys the odd, abstract stylings and surrealism.

Yeah, I'll give you that one, both the book and film are a bit of a let down

I own it, and have watched it a few times, but I wouldn't say I was a fan

The film cuts out a lot of Kings long winded exposition bollocks. So unlike the book its not dull and tedious. Its still turd though.
