Star trek (2009)

First of the reboots of star trek. Story involves a romulan called Nero from the future who sets out to destroy the federation who he blames for the destruction of Romulus (romlulan home world) it's up to kirk and Spock who at this point with a alternate timeline really don't like each other to much, but along with Spock prime and the rest of the enterprise crew they set out to stop Nero and become the bromance we all know. Downside Lensfllare g!ore 8.4/10

Crimson Peak

wonderful atmospheric and beautifully shot Gothic horror / Gothic romance which is a love letter to those Gothic horrors of the 30s and 40s and early hammer movies, with even one of the main characters having the surname of Cushing. 9.2/10

The Tall T (1957)

Budd Boetticher is a director famous for his westerns co-produced and starring Randolph Scott. Generally filmed on location in the Lone Pines area of California his name on the credits is usually a stamp of quality. The Tall T is no exception.

Based on an Elmore Leonard story called The Captives, it finds Scott held captive along with the two passengers of a stage coach. Captive and held to ransom for $50,000 by western go to bad guy, Richard Boone and his two accomplices, one of whom is sharp shooting Henry Silva.

The Tall T is actually a very worthy film. Fairly short, it only runs 78 minutes, which means Boetticher doesn't mess about. It's straight into the action from the off and the film barely pauses to draw breath through out. Randolph Scott is his usual tough but fair self and works well with what is a fairly basic but engaging story of kidnap, betrayal and double cross. Look out for the scene where Scott shoots one of the villains (Skip Homeier) in the head with a shotgun, it's brief but bloody and quite unexpected. Also worth mentioning is a sequence where Scott rides a bull at a ranch for a bet. he's eventually thrown off but is chased by the enraged animal so jumps in a large drinking trough to escape. However the bull follows him feet first and clearly tramples him under water. Scott, western god that he is plays the scene in a single take but can clearly be seen limping off at the end of the take.

In 2000, The Tall T was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Still doesn't explain what a Tall T is though.

Girl Slaves of Morgana Le Fay. Been on the lookout for this for a while. Filed under 'erotic horror', i'd say that the first 30 minutes certainly live up to that description. There's a nice atmosphere for the first part of the film that goes up to and runs through the heroine's first meeting with the ubiquitous Morgana Le Fay. After that initial meeting, the atmosphere seems to drop off and although there are a couple of 'erotic' scenes after the opening half hour, they do not convey the same frisson of tension as those earlier in the film. It's a bit of a curiosity - as so many cult films are, but i'd most definitely put this under 'Inspired by Rollin.' If you like his films, you might like this.

Theater of Blood. Probably don't need to say much about this. One of my favourite films. Great hammy performance by Vincent Price and able support by the mighty Diana Rigg. Price goes through multiple wardrobe changes as he bumps off a circle of critics that ruined his career in ways inspired by Shakespearean plays (the dialogue of which Price delivers with relish throughout). One of the best British horror films of the 70s - with tongue most firmly in cheek.

Watched all 4 Critters movies.
Ahem.
First two are hoots, great to see Don Opper again, Android being a semi fave back then etc etc.
3 and 4 though.....jettisoning the small town setting of the first two in favour of a batteries not included style scenario, the 3rd installment is certainly the goriest of the quartet. A bit soulless though.
The 4th film endeavours to take our titular furballs into space...the death of any franchise. This is no exception. Nice wee turn fae the Dourif though....

For my sins I rewatched Jason X (2009, Tim Issac), this time with the comm, in which the folks behind the scenes proudly acclaim that the MPAA "enjoyed" the movie. Hence missing the point somewhat.

Will hopefully buy High Rise & The Witch when I'm in Liverpool this weekend ahem.....

Saw Lights Out at the cinema today. A dysfunctional family is plagued by a female spectre (who appears to have ripped her main gimmick off of the Weeping Angels) that has been haunting them for a very long time. This little B movie horror flick with a fairly no-name cast has gotten surprisingly decent reviews, and even more surprisingly a theatrical release down here, but to be honest I found it fairly mediocre and nondescript. Nothing terrible but a bland cast and a leaden pace even at just 90 minutes made it fairly dull and lifeless for me. Ho hum.

Trailer made me laugh a lot. Noted.
