For a seventh entry in a franchise, it’s better than it has any right to be. Also unusual at this point in a long running series, it takes it in a new exciting direction that sets up plenty of potential for future instalments. It’s rare for a horror brand that’s been relegated to home release to improve a great deal for it. The last two entries are better films than the last three cinematic releases. Although, Bride is pretty good, and 3 isn’t THAT bad. **** Seed though.

Visitors Assemble!! Scavenger Hunt (1979, Micheal Schultz) Here's a dud and a half. Vincent Price leaves a hunt in his will, so his awful family team up with oily lawyer Richard Benjamin. Up against them are a motley crew including Roddy McDowall ... James Coco ... Stephen Furst ... Cleavon Little ... Dirk Benedict even. It's as flat as Norfolk though. Screeching & mugging are no substitue for writing. The Murican Rentadick. The first misfire from 79 so far. Even Up From The Depths was funnier

**** you Mother!... Darren Aronofsky’s film that is. I was so angry leaving the cinema that I had to calm myself down with a few beers with my dinner. The pretentious biblical allegory that is about as deep as a kiddie’s pool, and as subtle as a brick in the teeth, is insulting to the viewer’s intelligence. It’s just plain boring too; Roman Polanski in his excellent 1965 film Repulsion handled the psychological elements of the female lead being driven mad much more interestingly. It’s a piece of shit that is a waste of the director and the cast’s talents. This is coming from someone who is generally a fan of Aronofsky’s work - The Wrestler and Black Swan are two of my favourites of the century. *1/2 out of ***** On a more positive note, I really enjoyed Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It’s not a great film, it’s not quite as smart as the original, and it lacks a fair share of its charm, but it’s inventive enough, funny enough, cheesy enough, and so over the top that I couldn’t help but be very entertained by it. ***1/2 out of *****

Game Of Survival (1985, Roberta Findlay) Noisy neighbours? Don't bother to nag, pick up a phone and turn 'em in!! Well, that's the plan anyhow .... A great companion to Paul Morrissey's Mixed Blood (1984), this is high grade Exploitation masquerading as social comment. Just look at the pedigree Some super 'stoned' dialogue precedes a home invasion on a grand scale AKA Tenement btw ... which is descriptive if nowt else.

it doesn't live up to the trailer or the films poster put its an enjoyable piece of early 80s trash involving demon possession and a disembodied hand. 6/10 A hugely enjoyable and brutal revenge movie with Keanu Reeves in the title role, who goes on a very bloody and brutal killing spree after the theft of his car and the murder of his dog, he's always gotting a bit of a bad rep but I've always enjoyed his films and his minimalist acting style suits his character and the film. 9/10 Last edited by trebor8273; 27th September 2017 at 08:33 PM. |

The Phantom Empire (1988) Producer / director / all round genius, Fred Olen Ray throws the kitchen sink at us in this tale of diamond prospecting in the California desert. We get cannibals, Robbie the Robot, a lost underground world, sexy women in animal skins (Say hi to Michelle Bauer, folks), as well as stop motion dinosaurs from another film. A decent cast - including Russ Tamblyn, Robert Quarry, Ross Hagen (In Indiana Jones mode), Jeffrey Combs (also in heroic Indiana Jones mode) and Sybil Danning as the buxom queen of the underground kingdom, - try and keep a straight face Yes it's dumb, but Olen Ray keeps things very lively and it's a lot of fun for a special* audience. *copyright MTDS. |
