The Ghoul (1933) A rare appearance for the mighty Boris Karloff in a British horror film which he made during a short dispute with Universal Studios. Although it had echoes of the previous years Universal film The Mummy the links are only tenuous. Rather than searching for his long lost love, Karloff's Egyptologist returns from the grave to claim back a large jewel stolen from his resting place and kill all those responsible. Whilst not up there with the best Universal horror films of the time this is still a worthwhile Gothic potboiler with atmosphere in spades and is certainly an improvement on Universal efforts like the previous years Murders in the Rue Morgue starring Bela Lugosi. This first British sound horror film is blessed with a cast worth repeating. Alongside Karloff we have Ernest Thesiger, Cedric Hardwicke, Kathleen Harrison and in his feature debut Ralph Richardson. |

Rambo 2008. John Rambo back in Thailand as snake catcher for local entertainment is asked to charter a boat for Christian missionaries to war zone area of Burma that is under tyrant Major Pa Tee Tint. When they are kidnapped, Rambo leads a group of Mercenaries on a rescue mission. Stallone returns as film director and actor for the 4th installment and made up for 3rd movie, this one has it all, good story line, plenty action and generally good splatter moments. From the beginning to the end there is action packed from the Burmese army and their way of recruitment strategy and torturing that may seem upsetting with a village attack. The cast done a great job with the Christian aid group with their beliefs that fighting doesn't solve anything until they need to fight and the mercenaries who only know fighting solves a lot. Unfortunately Richard Crenna passed away 5 years earlier but there is a flashback so we do see him and Jerry Goldsmith passed away so Brian Tyler was brought in for the score and done a decent job of it. "live for something or die for nothing".

I watched it the other day, I’d put in the same category as Goodfellas and Casino, it’s definitely up there with those two, and if I hadn’t seen Joker this year then this would be my film of the year! I paused it 3 times, twice to smoke and once to go pick my poorly nephew up from school, so it didn’t feel like 3 1/2 hours. I’ll definitely watch it again in the next few weeks and this time I’ll try it in one sitting

The Supergrass The Comic Strip film. A hopeless case bites off mair than he can chew when he pretends to be a smuggler. Filled with most of the regulars, Mayall being the missing link cough. Still patchy after all these years, as if Richardson was torn betwixt making a 'straight' thriller and a 'funny' movie?? It still has its moments, Sayle's overeager traffic cop being one. Coltrane a hoot as a rather brusque nutter being another.
