American Mary (2012)

A truly original modern horror film, superbly acted by Katherine Isabelle. The film concerning illegal body modification had a fantastic concept and set up for the first hour. Unfortunately it seemed to lose its way for me and it began to dawn on me the film, whilst very stylish and beautifully filmed didn't really have much of a story to it.

The Soska Sisters who directed, give us a terrific build up and some great characters, especially the owner of the strip club and then fails to explore them properly. It would have been great to see more of Mary's career as a freelance mob torturer.

It doesn't go full out body horror either, it must be over a decade since i last watched this and i was expecting full on graphic modifications similar to Dee Snider's Strangeland but the directors wimped out rather than going for the full shocks.

However despite these niggles i really enjoyed American Mary for the second time.

A load of lads driving motorbikes around an explodey field with a bit of nudey dancing thrown to keep the dads happy

The synth soundtrack is bloody horrendous I mean there is no rhythm or structure it's just experimental synth new wave modern dinner New Orleans on a Saturdays night in Chicago in the 1940s preformed by a time traveler from the 1970s in a club in Detroit who has no fingers and plays with the stumps that were his hands Jazz in order words I won't be buying the soundtrack on vinyl anytime soon

The sound effects are just as horrendous I mean if you were hungover and for some reason thought I know what will take the edge off this Deathsport I'm pretty sure you would have a mental breakdown the noise from the motorbikes or Death machines are they call them here beyond annoying Christ I can still feel my ear drums vibrating.

I'm convinced also that the dialogue was just made up as they went along they were just given a few words they that had to say from time to time just to give a feeling that there is an actual story and make you think that there is some structure to the whole films but believe me this was just someone with a hard on for motorcycles and people in tinfoil to watch them ride around with lasers and glass swords

Deathsport is an experience but one I don't want to experience again

Eraserhead. 1977.

Henry and his girlfriend live in a run down area and try to survive while taking care of a mutant screaming baby. Only David Lynch could come up with something strange and weird. The film I never really appreciated due to the slow pacing but somehow this has grown on me. This is like watching something through the mind of someone who is having a bad dream or nightmare about living in a dilapidated part of a world that can only exist in universe with very few people. The other way to look at is some people trying to survive a post apocalyptic nuclear war, hence the mutations and surrealism of the outskirts of the building and the effects of nuclear fallout. Either way this film still stuck with me for a bit after watching this for a third time.

THE STEPFORD WIVES (1975)

Katherine Ross and family move out of New York to the quite town of Stepford.
From the off, something does not seem right. All the men have a private club and the wives are subservient to their husbands, with no interests other than shopping and cleaning. When Katherines friend, her only ally in uncovering what is going on, appears changed and robotic, she sets out to discover the final truth..

Another enjoyable evening viewing. Not seen in a long time.
I remember the first time I watched it on TV, the ending was one of those 'what'! moments. No spoilers in them days. No pictures giving away the ending on DVD sleeves like my Anchor Bay DVD does!
Great stuff.

Vengeance (2022)

"And this is El Stupido"

"You call him that?"

"It's okay, he don't speak Spanish".

A film with some genuinely funny dialogue but ultimately the story about a possible murder of a young woman in Texas doesn't really go anywhere and the ending is unsatisfactory.

DEATH RACE 2000 (1975)

Hugely enjoyable Roger Corman produced movie. Great fun from start to finish.
While watching this through, I was thinking how good it would be if someone released the cars to collect. It would be great to have those as models.

Children Of The Corn III: Urban Harvest

2 Teens are adopted and taken to Chicago where one of them adapts whilst the other one still worships The One Behind The Light. It's not bad and I did like moving the story from rural America. Much preferred the second one.

Look Who's Talking

Classic 1989 Comedy (Which I haven't seen in years) sees Kirstie Alley get Pregnant and whilst going to Labor, meets up with John Travolta and eventually get together. But it's Bruce Willis who supplies the voice of the baby who really steals the show with sarcastic one-liners.

La donna del lago (1965) aka 'The Possessed'

An arty Giallo about a writer who returns to a hotel in an out of season lakeside Italian resort. At an earlier visit to the resort he had obsessed about the hotel's maid, Tilde and has returned determined to make his attraction known to the girl on this occasion, only to find she has committed suicide... or was it murder?

I do have a soft spot for films set at out of season hotels (Daughters of Darkness, anyone?). They seem to have an atmosphere all of their own.

This one has grainy noirish visuals, punctuated by dreamy washed-out flashbacks, with some French new wave style editing thrown in as well, all of which, along with the twisty plot serves to keep you off balance, and at times making you doubt the perceptions of the lead character.

I'm not sure why this film is not more well-known as it has the sort of execution that I would have expected would have had festival award panels purring like satisfied kittie-cats. I can only assume that it had poor distribution.

The only downside is that I guessed the murderer too early. There was one meaningful look too many, although it might be because I've seen so many Gialli now I've become attuned to the plot-beats.

I'd recommend that you watch this film with the Italian track. Although the English track matches the lip movements better it has a tinny other-worldly feel to it that takes you out of the movie. I only got ten minutes in before I had to stop it and restart in Italian.

When i watched this i wasn't even sure it was a Giallo. Doesn't really display any of the usual techniques and if i recall it's only a 12 or PG cert so not exactly violent or exploitative either.
