I was gonna throw that out there Rik, the question of if it could be made today as a straight adaptation, and I'm not so sure. It really is a psychotically violent work...

Yeah, first time I read it, about 15 years ago, I had to put it down a couple of times due to how graphic it is, especially the rat incident

That's one I forgot! Fight Club! Stupid, boring absurd and just an excuse for guys knocking shite out of each other. Most over-rated film of the '90's probably.

First thing so far in this thread I've really disagreed with. This is one of my top favorites.

And there isn't even much knocking the shit out each of other either....

It's just a bit too silly for my tastes.

People really seem to like Baz Luhrmann but I for one can't freaking stand his movies! Moulin Rouge is one of the biggest pieces of shite I've ever forced myself to endure, Australia and Romeo +* Juliet are also abysmal. I couldn't even bring myself to give The great Gatsby the chance. Awful, wishy washy, self loving nonsense with puddle deep symbolism for teenage girls who think they're hip. Utter gong.

*And seriously?

I read the Great Gatsby book, and while he takes a bit of artistic lisence very start and end, for the most part it is a fantasticly done adaption, and movie.

As for other Luhrmann's, I like them just because of how bizarre and odd they are :P

How do you know The Great Gatsby is like this if you haven't seen it?

I've seen Australia twice now and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. I imagine its because its adult entertainment on a large budget that doesn't involve unkillable men in capes fighting giant robots.

No. It was just very boring to me. As in for 2 hours nothing of value happened, and none of the characters went through any development what so ever. That's the true definition of "dull".

And as for TGG, i'm not willing to give it the time of day. I wont like it, I know I wont like it. So why should I bother?

Mind you with regards to Luhrmann, I don't actively dislike any of his movies but I vastly prefer the Zeffirelli Romeo And Juliet to his adaptation.
