Megalopolis has been taking shape inside Francis Ford Coppola's mind for nearly half of his life, and now he's finally ready to show it to the world. The 85-year-old director of The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and The Conversation has finally completed his operatic passion project, at considerable personal cost. It will debut next month at the Cannes Film Festival, hoping to attract global distributors willing to take a similar chance.

The movie is about the personal, political, and romantic clashes that arise during a battle to construct an American utopia, and it was shaped in part by the speculative prophecy of H.G. Wells, a murderous conspiracy from ancient Roman history, the devastation of the September 11 attacks, and the outsize influence of attractive cable news hosts, among a litany of other inspirations. "To that, I added everything I had ever read or learned about," Coppola says in a statement.

Vanity Fair has the exclusive first look at the result: Adam Driver as the idealistic architect and artist planning to rebuild a city that has fallen to ruins, and Nathalie Emmanuel as the socialite daughter of his nemesis, a corrupt mayor (Giancarlo Esposito), who likes his municipal kingdom the way it is. In his official logline for the film, Coppola describes Driver's character as having the "power to stop time," while Emmanuel's character is caught between the two, deeply in love with the artist but loyal to her hard-charging father, "forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves."

A desperate father, alongside a tenacious cop, battles his own demons on the streets of 1980s New York as he searches for his missing nine-year-old son.

This trailer has intrigued me and I've added the film to my lengthy Netflix list of things to watch when I take out a month subscription to that streaming service. As this isn't released until the end of May, I'm not going to subscribe until June that the earliest.

In blood-soaked Tudor England, Katherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII, is named Regent while tyrant Henry is fighting overseas. Katherine has done everything she can to push for a new future based on her radical Protestant beliefs. When an increasingly ailing and paranoid King returns, he turns his fury on the radicals, charging Katherine's childhood friend with treason and burns her at the stake. Horrified and grieving, but forced to deny it, Katherine finds herself fighting for her own survival. Conspiracy reverberates through the palace. Everyone holds their breath - for the queen to slip up, for Henry to take her head like wives before. With the hope for a future free of tyranny at risk, will Katherine submit to the inevitable for the sake of King and country?

It doesn't have a UK release date for a theatrical release yet, though that might become clearer after it's been shown at the Cannes film Festival.

Sources tell Variety that the film has sold into STXInternational for the U.K. and to Sony Pictures for most other overseas markets. FilmNation has sold remaining international markets to independent international distributors.

In the U.K., Variety understands that Prime Video is in the process of buying the film from STX. This could mean that STX is handling a theatrical release, while Prime Video takes the film for streaming, or that the streamer will also handle theatrical in the territory. Sources indicate that Prime Video is also picking up streaming rights in a number of other international markets.

"...Warner Bros. will release the first of its new batch of live-action 'The Lord of the Rings' films in 2026, which will focus on Andy Serkis? Gollum.

Original 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the movie and "will be involved every step of the way," Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said during an earnings call Thursday.

The project is currently in the early stages of script development from writers Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, and will "explore storylines yet to be told," Zaslav said..."
