Starring Paul Stephen Rudd!

A mean-spirited film. I get that they were aiming for a Friday the 13th approach, but whereas the violence in those films have a comic excess, Halloween 6's gore is needlessly sadistic.

The way poor Jamie Lloyd was dispatched was too cruel.

Also, ending the film with the the strangled scream of Dr. Loomis and then smash-cutting to "In Memory of Donald Pleasance" came across as rather ugly.

All said and done, the film is watchable in a weird way. Probably because it's a bizarre mess of film. It is funny that the film's climax takes place on the set of Ridley Scott's low-budget nightmare. And Donald Pleasance is as wonderful as he always has been. Shame this was to be his major role.

If you haven't seen this before, it's worth checking out. If only to see how far the slasher film had fallen before Scream give it a kick in the arse.

P.S. Any reason why Halloween 5 and 6 were released to straight to video over here? I know they weren't critical darlings but it's not like they were US box-office disasters (especially when you consider their low-budgets). Halloween 5 I can understand as it was independent film that may have had trouble securing distribution but, Halloween 6 had Miramax behind it. The whole thing seems strange.

Dracula 1931 last night, it's such a good film, Dwight Fry as Renfield was genius, but I think he was a bit crazy anyway so perhaps he wasn't acting!
All of the close up shots of Bela's eyes just glowing still get me.

I'm going to see Crimson Peak tonight so fingers crossed it's not all style over substance, but even if it is, from what I've seen it looks bloody gorgeous so I don't think I'll mind too much either way!

Cave of the Living Dead (1964)

Jess Franco regular Adrian Hoven stars as a police inspector investigating the deaths of seven girls from suspected vampirism in a sleepy old village.

Whilst the plot is pretty unoriginal, Cave of the Living Dead or Night of the Vampires as it was originally titled outside America, still manages to entertain. The plot whilst talky is fairly pacy and the film is nicely acted despite some atrocious dubbing which turns some characters into hilarious comedy stereotypes - see the innkeeper as a prime example.

Fortunately there are enough spooky Gothic subtleties on offer to counteract the unintentional humour. Witness gnarly hands clawing at a window and enough night time stalkings to make even the most hardened traveler prefer an evening chatting to the innkeeper in glorious overdub.

I'm with Demdike - it's surprisingly good. Very good performances, well-developed characters and it's committed to its concept. It never falls into that smug "Lincoln fighting monsters?!? Are you having a laugh!?!" trap.
