Sleepy Hollow (1999) Burton's best. A textural, timeless, gothic fairy-tale that continues to reward on re-watches. |

It has the shorter theatrical version instead of the longer workprint cut. However, because I haven't seen the workprint, I don't know if that one is significantly better than the version of the film shown in cinemas.

A Poundland exclusive though, I believe. |

Oliver the Eighth (1934) Classic short from the duo in which they both answer a lonely hearts style newspaper ad whereby the potential lucky suitor will get to marry a wealthy widow. Ollie is all smiles when he is chosen from the list of potentials, but what he doesn’t realise is that he is walking into a death-trap as the woman in question is not a widow by choice and has a vendetta against anyone named Oliver. Having been jilted by an Oliver long ago, she has made it her life’s work to marry Oliver’s and slit their throats. So, off Ollie goes with Stan in pursuit to start his new, rich married life. The visual gags here are gleefully good, from the widow’s crazy butler, Jitters, who plays imaginary cards and serves imaginary food, to Ollie’s dinner table disbelief at having to eat imaginary soup with imaginary seasoning, to Stan’s multiple accidents with a rifle. Mae Busch is also great as our jilted widow, with a frosty no-nonsense demeanour and a dour gleam in her eye as she stalks down the corridors of her stately home at night with sharpened blades poised ready to claim her eighth Oliver. The ending, whilst a little bit of a cop-out in respect to the preceding events, rounds everything off very nicely indeed and luckily the duo live to scrape chins another day. |

was going to have a vampire triple tonight of Blade, Near dark and Fright night but might have Burton double of Sleepy Hallow and Beatle Juice

I didn't know that – I'll have a look for it the next time I'm in town and near Poundland.

Thinking back, I think my favourite visual gag was when Stan knocked over the (non-existent) salt and threw some over his left shoulder out of superstition!

It was released back in 2003 so it's doubtful you'll see any around now unfortunately.

That's a shame, but at least you've saved me a wild goose chase in Poundland!

It's never a wild goose chase in Poundland at this time of year. I picked up a couple more films yesterday.
