October Horror Movie Marathon

SLEEPING BEAUTY – This excellent film was made by the writer Julia Leigh. It features a disenchanted woman kicking around in downtown Sydney. She splits her time between a vapid office job and visits to the apartment of a friend / former bf, a suicidal alcoholic who perhaps represents a link to an estranged bohemian past, but everything about her life feels quite glacial and empty. She takes a series of unsettling gigs with what appears to be some kind of high-end escort service, and these culminate in her undergoing voluntary anaesthesia before spending nights unconscious in the beds of moneyed strangers. ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is a really haunting film. It flows with a sense of unease that sets in from the start, and, without ever getting too dramatic, you feel something quite dark and shadowy looming over events, more so than would be the case with a movie that played up the horror angle more straightforwardly. In part that’s because of the long, still takes and the sense of distance they evoke, and a certain look and feel that put me in mind of a more dream-like Haneke, maybe. I’ve seen it before and have reviewed it here on the Labs I think, but it’s worth more than just a second look. A highly recommended, for me at least genuinely disturbing film that you should check out if you haven’t already.

About too watch the rite is it as bad as the critics made out? If it is might give it a miss.

Gave up after 30 minutes was putting me too sleep. Watching mirrors instead which not seen since first came out but remember it being quite unnerving and creepy

Contamination. 1980.

A former astronaut helps a government agent and a police detective to track down the source of alien eggs on earth.

This films starts off like Zombie Flesh Eaters, a boat adrift in the water police helicopter trying to raise the attention of anyone on board then goes full blown whack like Alien, chest bursting out, instead of a alien all we see is blood and bowels. Ian McCulloch stars as the drunken former astronaut who was on a trip to Mars found the eggs and yet nobody believed him alongside his colleague who had died.

This film does a energy surge bubble at the start but seems to go down a little bit towards the middle then surges back up nicely, for a film that was financed by a drug cartel (allegedly) and made it on the the video nastie list, it is cheesy but I still enjoy to view it once in a while.

Two friends on spring break bump into a millionaire wall street banker in a hotel lobby. He see an opportunity to try get these two ladies on to his yacht for some fun times. But this ain't no pleasure cruise these business men need to get to the Caymen islands to make a deal that will make them a hell of alot of money and they are using the girls as a cover. The girls throw a spanner in the works when they bring along three fellas they picked up in the harbour and a stray cat. This is about to turn into a different kind of pussy party.

It an hilarious idea but there are so many long dragged out scenes in this film the dancing scene just seemed to go on forever. Some of the actor are decent but others are absolutely brutal. As far as the acting goes big George Kennedy steals the show he is just looking for any opportunity to f*** up the teens he didn't want on board in the first place and once he gets his chance is hilarious and he looks like he is loving it The cat attacks are great tons of blood and body parts getting chewed off sadly there is too much BS in between people over acting freaking out

Its hilariously bad but very entertaining at the same time.
This is the best toxic radioactive killer cat on a yacht film i have ever seen

I too think this is brilliant. Emily Browning is amazing, as Frankie says it's incredibly haunting.

I've only seen it the one time. In a way i was afraid of going back to it and it not seeming as good.

I know exactly what you mean about being reluctant to go back to certain movies in case they disappoint a second time around. That kind of thing is one reason I don't do a lot of re-watches, which would be shame if they were all like 'Sleeping Beauty', film that surpassed my expectations on second viewing. All these ones I've watched so far this October are films I've seen before, but had no real recollection of before I sat down with them again. So far it's all been good.

With Sleeping Beauty made by a woman it's probably not as sleazy as it might have been had it been directed by a man.

Imagine if Jess Franco had directed it.

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)



Oh Mr Russell, you crazy old pervert!
This is probably the most British film I've watched in ages, I loved every mad second of it.

So many stand out moments, Amanda Donohoe being snake charmed out of the basket for one, Hugh Grant getting excited over his two girls wrestling in flight attendant outfits Any of the VHS quality 'dream' inserts.

I don't know how I have never seen this before, I bought the bluray on the day it came out, it's just been on the shelf since then! It's now a firm favourite and I can see myself watching it at least once a year!
