October Horror Movie Marathon

Hell Fest (2018)

One of that small group of films set in theme parks (The Funhouse, Dark Ride, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer - are all i can think of just off hand). This slasher about a group of young people who visit a Halloween carnival and end up stalked by a mask wearing serial killer is a wonderful modern slasher film that harks back to it's 80's routes.

Helped by the fact the whole thing looks so damn good. The Hell Fest event is a fabulous place, all gaudy, day-glow colours - no running around in pitch black darkness here folks - in fact it's quite Bava like in it's use of colour and felt fresh and original. Thankfully it boasts a reasonably likable cast to root for and a couple of really well done practical murder set pieces. It only let itself down because there simply weren't enough deaths which was a real pity, however the last scene is so mundane it's frankly outrageous.

A film which across the years has become a none demanding October tradition.

Wrong Turn. 2003.

A horror that actually does work, it involves six young people being hunted by a family of cannibalistic mountain men, is very straightforward and offers no real surprises, a mix of The Hills Have Eyes and the country side. The mountain men prove to be some of the scariest movie killers that I've seen in a long time, probably because the film wastes no time in showing us exactly what they plan to do with their victims.The main characters behave just like anyone else would in that situation, and they're likable enough and believable enough to make us root for them, aside from having a few jokes and a character mentioning Deliverence, everything else i taken seriously.

Pin. 1988.

A interesting but slow psychological horror involving a medical dummy named Pin who is a comfort for two children then as they get older the young son develops more twist to confiding in the dummy.The first half hour or so is sort of awkward to watch due to some of the children's experiences. The latter half of the film doesn't focus on Leon's psychology as much as one would expect, though it is clear that the kid has a warped idea of sexuality based on his twisted parental guidance and a sexual encounter he witnessed involving his beloved Pin and his father's nursing assistant. The acting is interesting especially from Terry O' Quinn as the strict father.

NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW - 'Dark Night Of The Scarecrow' aside, I always end up feeling a little let down by scarecrows in horror movies. Maybe I'm expecting a bit too much of them, but for me they seem to struggle to live up to their full macabre potential. 'Night Of The Scarecrow' attempts to redress the balance a smidge by having its crow-scaring bad guy perform acts that require a special effects team, and so, although it plays out roughly like a slasher complete with an array of Freddie-like references and mannerisms, it also brings in stuff like satanic scarecrow ears of corn that transform into thrashing, body-ripping tendrils a la the 'The Thing'. It's a thoroughly silly, only semi-coherent movie that had me entertained with its preference for wacky set-pieces over narrative virtue, although anyone actually looking for an explanation will eventually be treated to a mid-film info-dump concerning a small town's sorcerous past. Characters drop in and stick around enough to either do something weird (that sleazy priest and his oddball family) or die, and again, I can only say I approve. There's a certain look to US horror films of the mid nineties that I struggle to describe, a stylisation that somehow combines flatness with garishness. Anyway, it has that, as well as the lightweight quality shared by much of nineties horror. It's by the late Jeff Burr, who did 'The Stepfather 2' and many others.

Now I need to re-watch this movie, 1st time didn't impressed me, but with this review looks amazing

I really liked Hell Fest too, was planning to watch it again this year.

Human Centipede 3

The main 2 Actors return in different roles from the previous 2 movies as Prison Governors who are under pressure to get their Prison under control. To do this, they take inspiration from those Films (They exist in this film) and get Tom Six to consult, it's all rather meta as spoofs are mentioned and Bree Olson (From the Adult Film Parody) stars alongside Eric Roberts. Dieter Laser is rather entertaining as the demented Warden.

With all the talk of the Terrifier Films, these movies are rather forgotten, this one was just as violent. I got the unrated Blu-Ray, they put all 3 films together for a 4 and half hour feature.

A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Don't need to go into too much detail on this one but it is my favorite one of them all, seemingly a yearly watch for me.

House Of Whipcord

A French Model is kept Prisoner in a Reform School type Prison by deranged Wardens and is tortured until she repents. Quite a decent effort especially the performances from the female guards are rather menacing.

Dying Breed (2008)

Australian backwoods horror in which Saw's Leigh Wannell and three friends who go out into the Tasmanian wilderness to find the supposedly extinct Tasmanian tiger. However what they don't count on is the legend of Alexander Pierce, a real life convict known as "the Pieman" from the 1800's who escaped custody in said wilderness and ate his fellow escapees.

I love shit like this. Out of their depth city folk being stalked, tortured and murdered or kidnapped for breeding purposes by cannibal descendants of near mythical figures. It's brutal and nasty and not the sort of film they seem to make nowadays. A film where even the 'nicer' people you come across are likely to bite your mouth off in bloody and gory fashion.

An actual film about Pierce came out the following year called Van Diemen's Land. That's highly recommended to those who enjoy a slice of cannibalistic survival horror.

It's been years since i watched either film so a rewatch of Dying Breed proved something a little different to my normal classic Halloween horror selections.

The Descent. 2005.

The Descent offers an excellent atmosphere and very creative moments. The opening shows a shocking event that becomes a minor plot device. The entire first half is a better adventure film than a horror one, the team's first enemy is the landscape. Writer/Director Neil Marshall has an impressive style, especially for some amazingly lighted claustrophobic scenes. Once in the caves and nowhere to go offers one of the best jump scenes that moves the film from adventure to horror.

Dead Silence. 2007

Directed/co-written by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, the men who brought us the successful "Saw" series, are also behind this splendidly spooky horror film. Originality is a hard thing to find in the horror genre these days, but this film manages to sluff off most of the typical horror set-ups and create an interesting and compelling story. This is quite a turn around from the "Saw" franchise, which, while it is a good series, has become more of a gore fest than anything. On the other hand, "Dead Silence" is a supernatural horror film with a very well written story. Character development is strong, and the acting helps that out as well, which is always a plus. Ryan Kwanten, an Australian actor, plays the lead role and is very believable. Donnie WWahlberg play the sceptical detective on the trail of a murderer.This is certainly a underrated movie

I had not seen this one in a while and was saving it until October so made this my first film.
Yeah, great stuff only slightly let down by the 'Jordy Verrill' segment for me, which would have been way better played serious.

Picked out as a first watch by my son. He really enjoyed it. Loved the effects by Savini especially the shotgun head shot.

Another film picked out by my son as a first time watch.
Yep, another winner. Noted was the girl in half on the floor and how good the effects looked.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2007)

Another film I had not seen in a very long time. Really enjoyed watching this through again and I had actually forgotten how good a movie it is and wished I watched it again sooner.
