Spanish Horror

How many people here like Spanish horror?

I loved Pans Labyrinth (sorta horror lol), Shiver, Devils Backbone, Orphanage and [REC]. Also quite enjoyed the 6 films to keep you awake anthology from spain although I have only seen Babys Room, Blame and To Let (directed by one half of the [rec] directors). Fermat's Room was also another awesome spanish movie although its not horror at all, more of a thriller. But it was quite clever and loved the ideas, its about these group of people brought together in a room to solve maths puzzles while the walls close in.

Am looking forward to [rec] 2 and will be watching a recent spanish flick called Imago Mortis.

Yes, del Toro's films are great... The Nameless (based on Ramsey Campbell's book) was good, I liked Fragile and anything by Balaguero is worth a look. Romasanta is a nifty werewolf movie.

We can't discuss Spanish horror without mentioning the Blind Dead series! Yuzna's Rottweiler is trashy fun, and so is Sexy Killer. I recently saw Open Graves (starring Eliza Dushku) but it's mediocre at best.

What else is out there?

The first two Blind Dead films are classics. Paul Naschy's films may not be for all tastes but some of them are good fun.

Two Spanish ex-nasty 'cannibals' are worth mentioning. The Cannibal Man (highly recommended) and Cannibal Terror (remarkably unrecommended).

The Spanish horror, Cemetery of Terror, (with a stone-faced Hugo Stiglitz) is lots of fun - well worth seeking out. It's surprisingly violent and gory with more than a passing nod to The Evil Dead. BCI put it out on DVD in the States a few years back.

I seen that too and even though it was filmed in spain and directed by spanish director, IMO its still a American horror. It felt like a typical US teen horror.

There's also the great Thesis from the man who went on to make The Others. Also Fausto 5.0 is a great slice of modern horror/sci-fi.

Bloody Moon is also a fun little Slasher film from Jess Franco, one of the few that I frequently re-visit from the lad. There's always his unofficial entry into the Blind Dead series Mansion of the Living Dead, which is sleazy fun, but not really worthy of the Living Dead title.

Lorlei's Grasp is also a worthy title to seek-out from the director of the Blind Dead movies.

Paul Naschy's work is also worth seeking out.

I used to hate Bloody Moon until I saw Severin's fabulous remastered dvd and now I love it!

I have loads of time for Jess Franco but I cant stand Mansion of the Living Dead

I have only seen one Naschy film and that was Panic Beats, which was ok.

I've seen Thesis but can't remember a thing about it!

Agree that Fausto 5.0 deserves attention - it's not great but it is good.

Non-horror, really, but Intacto is a favourite Spanish mystery-thriller.

Point taken about US style of Open Graves...

Another one (with some horror content) that's made in Spain but not strictly a Spanish film is Goya's Ghosts (dir. Milos Forman). I think it's a very good film, whatever its nationality.
