question for you... it's well-known that Fulci is written off as a B-movie hack in some circles. should you want to challenge this, which of his films would you offer as evidence and why?

Any circle that would write Fulci off as a "hack" isn't worth interacting with.

Fulci's films are brilliant and are in no need of justification, but I would recommend Don't Torture A Duckling and The Beyond to those who are unfamiliar with his work though.

And some snooty film critics need to be chain whipped Fulci-style.

I couldn't care less that Fulci's films are written off as rubbish by certain critics.I find them entertaining and atmospheric, and that's good enough for me.

interesting the direction that took... I was thinking more along the lines of enlightening friends/colleagues/fellow horror fans who write Fulci off based on what is said by the critics and the fact that they associate Fulci with bad gore movies

Honestly, I've never once listened to a critic.

Fulci was a self-confessed "genre terrorist." He made westerns, giallos, Eurocrimes, horrors, and comedies.

I'm a big fan of his early gialli,I think they're amongst his best work.
Most people seem to concentrate on his later work though.

As an introduction to Fulci I would go for Duckling followed by Seven Notes in Black. They certainly made me rethink the director.

I'd also recommend his western Massacre Time and his only (sadly) Eurocrime, Contraband.
