RIP Jess Franco. A genuine surrealist, and one of the best.

A sad loss indeed. Sometimes an acquired taste, old Jess, but hell there was a load of his films which were well deserving of the label 'cult classic'. RIP Spain's finest purveyor of exploitation.Lina is waiting for you.

RIP to a director whose reputation has always intrigued me. Shamefully, I still haven't taken the time to see any of his work. Would somebody point me in the best direction to start with his work?

Watched Exorcism (1974) with the comm. God, he was honest. also watched the interview segment on my SS Faceless dvd, good and yet again painfully honest, even if he contracdicts what he says on the comm hahaha.... though did feel it may have been part of a longer doc??? Female Vampire (1973) lurid isn't the word. But at least you know what you're getting with JP Johnson nearly watched Jack the Ripper, but the idiot upstairs started banging on the roof (maybe he thought I was watching porn hahaha) Prick.

Let's not forget that Franco was hailed by Orson Welles as the world's greatest director (no, I'm not kidding!). He had a photographic memory, was a piano virtuoso and loved jazz, spoke several languages, and liked lesbians (always a good thing in my book ). This was no idiot. I think because he was so intelligent is the reason he got bored so quickly and did films in very quick succession to allay said boredom. He will be greatly missed. In every one of his film that I've seen there was at least one moment that made you sit up and go 'Wow!' These lesser films as a whole might have been a bit rubbish overall, but he always threw something at you that would get your attention. I'd agree with Tim Lucas who said 'To watch one of his films, you have to see all of his films.' Those who've seen a fair amount will understand what this means. Everything is kind of connected and the more you get into his films the more you start to dig where he's coming from.

Welles even asked Franco to shoot the battle scenes in CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT.
