I got Steve Vai by the way. At least i got to ruin a Whitesnake album. ![]() I quite like Slip of the Tongue actually. ![]() I was hoping for Mick Mars, Warren De Martini or CC DeVille. Proper eighties guitar gods. ![]() |

Metal guitar has to be fast otherwise it's not really metal is it? |

Dave - Jimi - Pete - Richie - Jimmy - That's like saying the Sex Pistols are not punk, because they didn't play as fast as The Ramones or The Damned are not punk because they are not as musically competent as The Clash were!

![]() Quote: ![]() I wondered how long it would take for someone to mention Doom / Sludge / Desert metal and push my sweeping generalization under the carpet. However i still stand by my original view that if all we had still was Gilmour and Clapton strumming away we'd be stuck in an AOR MOR nightmare. The original idea of metal from it's earliest days of the NWOBHM, through eighties thrash was always speed. Agreed, bands such as Trouble as one example began to change how metal was played, but when it comes to metal in it's most traditional sense (Maiden, Saxon, Priest, Dio, Accept) then speed was one of it's main thrill factors. |

I agree, but for me being able to play a multitude of basically unrecognisable notes in quick succession is boring, sure I can play pretty fast, but that doesn't necessarily make me a great guitarist, I'd rather be remembered for my melody playing than my shredding chops (well, remembered on the Halifax music scene anyway ![]()

Yeah, without NWOBHM then metal music as we know it would be very different. But without the likes of Gilmour, we wouldn't have bands like Mastodon or Dream Theater. In fact, without Arthur Brown we wouldn't have Bruce Dickinson in Iron Maiden! And Rik, I totally agree. Dragonforce, for example, are impressive at first, but playing that fast soon gets boring to hear. Even moreso to watch. Whereas, for me, 3-chord punk bands are a hell of a lot more enjoyable to listen to and watch live. No showing off, just bloody good tunes. |

Without Robert Johnson and the Delta Blues then we wouldn't have had Rik, so let's leave it there as we are just going round in circles. ................... Any fans of Arch Enemy? I was surprised Angela quit to become the band's manager earlier this year. However new singer Alissa is an excellent replacement, if not a little identikit. She's also gorgeous so should help attract new fans. This new track War Eternal shows the band at their melodic best. |
