Aa far as I can tell Last Blood has nothing to do with Hard Boiled. Wish someone would actually release Hard Boiled properly.

I’ve never seen this film, and it could well be about an actual magic cop, but did you know that the police use the acronym “MAGICOP” when detecting crime? It stands for Motive, Ability, Guilty Intent, Conduct after the crime, Opportunity and Preparation.

Might win someone a pub quiz one day [emoji12]

Ko Chun is the greatest high-roller in the world, king of the casino and as cool as only an in-his-prime Chow Yun-fat (Hard Boiled; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) can be. But that's before a nasty head injury renders him mentally disabled.
After being befriended by unscrupulous hustler 'Knife' (golden-throated Canto-Pop king Andy Lau), it is discovered that, despite his other impairments, Ko's unerring instincts for gambling remain intact. Knife thinks he's on to a sure thing but Ko still has enemies and they haven't forgotten him...

A huge hit on its original release, and one of the defining films of Chow Yun-fat's astonishing career, the card-sharks at 88 Films are proud to roll the dice on a gloriously restored version of this Hong Kong classic.

I have never seen God of Gamblers, but it sounded good so I used some points and got a healthy discount on an order with it, The Whip and the Body, and Ark of the Sun God.

From FB:

"Hi everyone, sorry for for the lack of "official" reaction to the complaints about our Hell of the Living Dead BD/UHD release.

We have taken them seriously although it has taken time to work out the best way to address them, but we have been busily getting them addressed and yesterday we viewed a new Dolby Vision HDR regraded version with the English audio synch tidied up and its definitely much better now.

So, we are going to go ahead and reprint these discs with the revised master and implement a replacement programme. We haven't worked out the best way to do this yet bit will obviously let you know once we have the discs in hand in (could still be a few months due to compression, authoring. check disc approval, printing etc).#

If you have bought this from us directly (or do buy it from us until the new versions are in ) we will figure out a way to send these to you automatically so you wont need to contact us.

Please don't contact us yet with proof of purchase etc as we are not
setup to take these details down yet.

Thanks for your patience and honestly we do listen and want to do them best we can, sorry this one has had to take a second go at to get right.

n.b. We are also planning to do the same with House on the Edge of the Park but that one is quite a bit more involved to get the framing perfect as we'll need to start from scratch basically and it will take a while.)"

Sounds like an expensive oversight.

I didn't buy the 4k disc of Hell of.., as I'd never seen it before and so I bought a used bluray in CEX last month for £6, I loved it, but it doesn't seem the kind of film that would need to look any better, and there is so much stock footage used. I did buy the Cannibal Holocaust one though which looked brilliant. Listened to the Kim Newman and Barry Forshaw commentary track which was amusing lol.

Yeah I was tempted to buy the 4K but like you said not sure it needs to be a good looking film and I have the 88 blu ray already

peter alex 19th April 2023 05:09 PM

it's a shame that they were problems with the discs but lucky i have not brought them so i will wait till the discs as been fixed according to hmv 88 films release of tentacles is not getting released to january of next year or is that just the re-release and if it has not been released why

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 19th April 2023 10:27 PM

I bought both direct from 88 Films, but haven't watched them yet. I'll probably hold off until I receive replacement discs with the rectified AV issues.

Definitely in for The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism. A beautifully atmospheric Gothic horror film.

The Thomas Crown Affair as well.

Seven films? They'll be asking a hundred quid for it.

I've had the Anchor Bay coffin set for years, since release give or take. I've only ever watched House of Mortal Sin which I loved. I'd really like this set so I hope it is within the boundaries of affordable.

That’s a superb looking set, time to retire the old Redemption box sets. Interesting how the PW set is UK only. Now that Indicator have a deal going with Salvation, I wonder if they’ll be releasing these in the States (pure speculation on my part)?

Redemption have already released the Walker films in the States via Kino if i'm not mistaken.

They did yes. They also released Shiver of the Vampires, Two Orphan Vampires, Cold Eyes of Fear and Black Magic Rites in the states through KL all of which are now getting Indicator releases in the states. I know Salvation own the rites to all the Rollin films and have licensed them to KL and now Indicator. It will be interesting to see if the licensing in the states for the PW titles remain with KL or not.

Can you imagine the furore if Indicator released the Walker films in the States in similar versions to the Rollin films. Sturdy boxes, thick booklets and different or superior extras? :axekiller:

A similar set to 88’s would be much better and would be a nice companion to the Norman J. Warren set. They really shouldn’t have gone down the road of single releases for the Rollin films in my opinion.

In a way i'm pleased they did opt for single releases because some of his films i really don't rate. School Girl Hitchhikers for one. I can miss that altogether and not have felt to have paid any more money whatsoever for it.

postman delivers a punch

the postman fights back is one film i always wanted to get a blu-ray release and now it is i am really looking forward to it and double impact and taxi hunter i will get as well they are also releasing long arm of the law 1+2.

I think that was on the Jezebel imprint and the only Rollin I haven’t seen as it never appealed. The only Rollin I genuinely don’t care for is Zombie Lake lol

will graham 6th May 2023 12:36 AM

I hope double impact has the special features from the mvd release. Still annoyed that the latest release of hard target will be missing the kino lorber features.

Love Zombie Lake - utterly bonkers!

However, I'm not sure that Indicator would be able to better the stellar Redemption release except perhaps do some new extras?

Dave Boy 6th May 2023 11:45 AM

Nice! I'm up for the Pete Walker box set for sure.
The Sexploitation box set is out at the end of this month as well.

Amazon have the Pete Walker box set up at £80

Extras are mentioned but in typical vague as shit 88 Films style.

£11.43 per movie doesn't sound too bad...

I would have liked a book though if this is supposed to be an LE?
