Oh, he absolutely did - but he now takes that back, having finally seen the films in decent copies. In fact, he enjoyed recording the commentary for Crimes at the Dark House so much that he offered to do The Face at the Window as well (both times with regular commentary partner Kevin Lyons), an offer that we were only too happy to take him up on.

There's a great bit in one of the Kim Newman commentaries in which he says that he thinks that the best Tod Slaughter performance is probably in The Ticket of Leave Man, but...

I think if you're a connoisseur, you don't want the best Tod Slaughter acting, you want the most. And I think you get that probably in Crimes at the Dark House, which is a film that managed to take the most hideously appalling person in English literature and make him worse in the film!
