Watched my first Maria intro yesterday night (for Love Me Deadly) and I'd say she does a decent job,not great but decent.
There is an option to skip all the "Maria bits" on the disc btw. ;)

bdc 8th September 2011 07:09 PM

Received Code Red's Mardi Gras Massacre today! :woot:

Wonder when Axel will be shipping Scream/Barn of the Naked Dead?

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 8th September 2011 10:37 PM

You seen Mardi before mate?

keirarts 9th September 2011 03:13 PM

Can now vouch for Horror Movie Empire.com: Earth's BIGGEST Horror Selection.

2 disc dead pit showed up today, so I ordered some more stuff off them including the christopher lee blue underground collection and the mgm release of after midnight 25 quid for both so not bad going at all, slow postage but free shipping and they accept paypal.

bdc 9th September 2011 03:33 PM

Just checked and the Maria double bill covers are not reversible it seems (like I expected) but Haunted and Mardi Gras Massacre have nothing on the reverse either...a bit disappointed by this to be honest.

Got it at the right time then.

The site has a few rarities on it (including a pretty rare 3-disc amytiville sequel box) and not very dear at all. Its a shame my dudget is limited as I could go a little crazy on that site!

Just got a statement from Bill on this. ;)
"sorry about that. I would've done reversable but majority of people demanding it is downright nasty and Misogynist. If I listen to them, then it'll show them the language they use is right. I even let a police office read some posts and he tells me they show traits of woman abuser/hater. As for the double bill, they are re-release of previous titles, so it kind of doesn't deserve a reversable. It's also strange of nasty Misogynist wanted Maria removed, but didn't demand Elite Entertainment or Media Blasters to remove Joe Bob Briggs or Retromedia to remove Morellla. "

People did indeed call Maria horrible names, even if they were "just passionate about the dvd's" they could have asked for a reversible cover without all the name calling.

I hope this isn't just a case of Bill saving on printing costs. I know its cynical but he does come out with some outlandish statements. EG Code Red closing summer 2011.

If indeed its true then it really is pathetic. So what if companies use a gimmick to help promote their releases. I would think most of the complainants don't actually know what a real woman looks like anyway and have only seen them being slashed to bits in films.
I am delighted that these obscure films are being released full stop. Yes you can grumble a little if you wanted a full artwork cover, but does it really matter.

I can only think of Arrow and Shameless who use reverse artwork and very welcome it is too. Major horror companies ie Optimum and Lionsgate never even contemplate bonuses like this.

As for Mardi Gras Massacre, Maria's pic on the cover is probably the best thing about it. I find that people who like the film haven't actually seen it. :)

Thinking about giving Mardi Gras a spin tonight,I've never seen it btw... :o

 Prepare yourself b!

The best advice I could give would be to have plenty of hard liquor on stand by. ;)

bdc 9th September 2011 07:19 PM

Hard liquor?!
Any films you could compare it with?

It sort of plays out like a (very) low budget re-imagining of Blood Feast.

Best viewed inebriated, for sure. :D

How much lower than Blood Feast can the budget go?!

You'd be surprised - believe me!

Blood Feast is also one of those so bad it's good kind of films, that you know is very aware at how cheesy it is.

I'm not sure the same could be said about MMM (so bad it's bad, perhaps?!). Ultra cheesy with some terrible dialogue. On top of that, it also has plenty of prostitutes, gore, and a very odd score... :loco:

I very much look forward to your opinion of this one, Bruno!

Well...I like Blood Feast...Ishtar!

Sounds good to me...will post my findings. ;)

Btw just a quick heads up,seems CR's Long Ride From Hell (best dvd version of the Steve Reeves western) is really oop now.
There's 1 left on Amazon and it's out of stock at several webshops.
Prices are still decent on eBay and marketplace though (just wondering if these sellers have stock).

bdc 9th September 2011 08:20 PM

Currently watching The Curious Case of the Campus Corpse (aka The Hazing),saw the trailer recently and wanted to give it a spin. ;)
Much better than I expected so far.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 9th September 2011 08:34 PM

You should be watching Mardi Gras Massacre with a bottle of Tequila, b. :tsk:

I do too.

MMM replaces the Egyptian mythos with Aztec, though

It does have it's charms, but it is quite cringe-worthy. I hope you enjoy it!

Disappointing, but thanks for letting us know. I find his reasoning pretty stupid, but then again I find most of what he spouts to be nonsense. Everyone else suffers because of a few raging nerds on the internet? Completely silly. It wouldn't surprise me, if it was either related to cost, effort, or he just plain didn't want to and he's passing the blame elsewhere, to get one over on the people who give him stick on his blog.

I'm still tempted to pick up Mardi Gras Massacre though. The write up in Teenage Wasteland has me very interested. Sounds very much like trashy fun, and it's one of the few slashers from that period that I have yet to see.

Finished this and it's a fun one,not a horror film though.
A hard picture to classify...parts sports drama, thriller and comedy.

Also some extras of the original Code Red/Shriekshow release are included on the new double bill (if you pick the "watch without Maria" option there's a different menu).

Haven't watched Mardi Gras Massacre yet, hopefully today. ;)

No new Moontown review yet so...
Tom and Kendra review a largely forgotten/unnoticed CR release:The Black Klansman (1966,Ted V. Mikels). ;)

I think I've found an article that may clear things up. ;)

From "The 2010 Golden Gavel Awards" (Dvd Verdict)

DVD Verdict - The 2010 Golden Gavel Awards

"SANTA MONICA, CA (31 Dec 2010) As we wind down yet another year in home entertainment, the Verdict staff once again offers up a look at the best DVD and Blu-ray releases gracing retail store shelves. Our list may appear conventionally mainstream and heavy on high definition, but the rationale behind these decisions couldn't be more sound.

**) Studio Commendation: Code Red
We begin this year's list with a new tradition, honoring a studio or distributor that has gone above and beyond the call of duty in preserving films most mainstream audiences don't even know exist and could care less about. These are the anti-blockbusters from years past which hold a special place in the hearts of minds of true movie lovers. And to award this year's winner, I turn the podium over to Judge Tom Becker: "While Horror High: 35th Anniversary Edition, Madman: 30-Year Anniversary Edition, The Black Klansman, Death Journey, Stigma, and The Carrier would never warrant a place on a 10 Best List, together they are a unique and formidable group. Taking up the mantle that Something Weird Video seems to have dropped in favor of downloadables, Code Red has put out some killer special editions for films that might never see the light of day or would otherwise be relegated to the cut-out bin. These releases are genuinely fun, each one like a weird little surprise package. While the big studios so often lard their special editions with consumer-friendly, EPK-style supplements, Code Red is giving us bizarre and hilarious commentary tracks (Horror High, Death Journey), cool retrospective featurettes (Madman), interviews with lesser-known but still-interesting supporting players, "alternate" openings (historically important from an exploitation standpoint, as these films often played under various names), and the best trailer collections, usually with a self-mocking reference on the menu screen ("More Pointless Code Red Trailers"). Code Red has always added a little something extra to their releases, but this year -- particularly with Horror High, Madman, and the forthcoming Black Klansman -- they've really stepped up their game. And for that, we salute you!""

It seems they are quite special, I shall redeem my complete ignorance by picking up a couple of these beauties when I'm not so skint, shame on me :o

No worries Rik,they're only special if you like the mostly obscure films they release. :loco: ;)
I'm curious which titles you would get though.

I'm thinking about getting Madman, Night of the demon(I think Reaper is a fan of this ;)) and Mardi Gras Massacre

bdc 11th September 2011 11:09 AM

Yep Reaps likes Night of the Demon.
Planning on giving Mardi Gras Massacre a spin today as I was too tired yesterday. ;)
I'll post my findings.
Madman is a slasher classic and the CR disc has great extras.

bdc 11th September 2011 11:32 AM

Some trailers for the new CR releases. ;)
Can't find a trailer for Haunted (1977) btw...

Mardi Gras Massacre (tv spot?)
Seems this won't play imbedded?

Btw anybody else having trouble playing the Mardi Gras video?
