I watched my DVD last night. Its been a long long time and I have to admit Blair Witch Project has stood the test of time well. In fact being a little older I think I appreciated it more. As for how it looks well I can't see what could be so drastic a change. Unlike more modern found footage films this was actually filmed on old style camcorders so looks exactly like you'd expect. Oddly my dvd played in 16:9 even though its supposed to 4:3.

So with The Blair Witch Project. I've tried every setting I've got and yet my dvd plays in 1:85:1 ratio despite the film being shot in 4:3. Has anyone else observed this?

This is from the info on DVD Compare

If your player is set to "16:9" it will output the image zoomed and matted to 1.78:1 as it may have played in some cinemas. If your player is set to "16:9 Full" then the image is open matte 1.33:1. This also applies to all extras and menus.

How does open matte 4:3 work? Forgive my ignorance.
I've switched between 16:9 and 16:9 full and they look identical.
I'm surprised it doesn't just play in standard 4:3 like virtually every 4:3 disc I've got.

It's basically this image on your screen. Black bars at the sides, none top or bottom.

Sounds like your tv is basically zooming in and cropping the image top and bottom to create a widescreen image. Some early Hammer films were shot open matte and then zoomed in for widescreen viewing.

Ideally your Blair Witch Project should look like this. Second image with flash to show actual tv screen

The Evil Dead was shot open matte and should also ideally be seen 1.33:1; many releases have in the 1.78:1 ratio.

Yeah I'm not getting that. I'm getting a full 16:9 screen no matter what I do. Weird.

Many films were shot open matte with the intention of matting them for cinema presentation (which could range from 1.66:1 to 1.85:1). When they were shown on old TV broadcasts or on home video they simply removed the mattes top and bottom to make them fit the TV screen better. This obviously worked well for TV but it was never the intended aspect ratio.

Blair Witch was never intended to be matted either in the cinema or on home video so has always been 4:3

Does it look stretched horizontally or matted (lossing image top and bottom)?
