Alien Hunter. James Spader is an cryptologist who used to work for SETI and now works Berkeley university, who is approached by the government to investergate a sigianl from and artifact found at the south pole, arriving at the faclity he is greeted by an ex girlfriend and her asshole of a boyfriend amost others. It soon becomes clear that the artifact is trying to communicate and something maybe inside, things take a turn for the worse when the item is opened just as Spader decodes the message warning not to open it, the artifact release some soft of virus which changes the gentic code of what it infects. Paranoia soon runs rampant and people turn on one another especially the asshole when the base comes under lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus to the outside world, taking parts from better knowing films such as the thing and contact amongst others while not as good as any of the films it borrows ideas from there are worse ways to spend 90 minutes. 6.5/10 Now watching the puppet masters. |

The Warriors (1979) The Warriors (1979) WTF you are shouting,Warriors Science fiction film? Well according to Walter Hill's introduction for the Directors cut,he says he always felt the film was set in the future ("Sometime in the future..." ) and he relates the story at the start as being akin to Battle of Cunaxa - 401 B.C,which in the Directors cut is shown as comic book frames.with Hill, narrating. And it has to be said that The Warriors would be a definite influence on a lot of the Italian apocalypse movie's,Bronx Warriors being an obvious contender. If The Warriors is set in the future, then it is one that resembles something along the lines of Soylent Green,Inner city streets that are over run with gangs,in fact I am hard pressed to remember anyone in the film that is not a gang member, apart from the odd train passengers you only really ever see gangs or cops. What is interesting that by the time this film came out, blaxploitation films were slowly on the decline, yet it has a firm foot in that genre,Gramercy Riffs are especially reminiscent of those films and the surge of kung fu films that hit the mid 1970's. Apart from maybe some of the gangs dress sense, there is a nice cross section of gang culture, some of the groups are all black others have inter racial mix like the The Turnbull AC’s,although the most iconic gang is of course the The Baseball Furies, they look the coolest out of all the gangs unfortunately they are not as cool when it comes to fighting, which is a shame as they make a very iconic bunch of villains. Adding to the atmosphere is Barry de Vorzon synthesizer score which from the very start with its main theme, has the feeling that someone is being chased and you better start running, probably the most surprising track is In The City by Joe Walsh, which plays over the end credits, but it works well as the film ends. Im sure most of us remember watching this back in the days of Video recorders, along with that other gang film The Wanderers, luckily both stand the test of time, mainly due to being such well made iconic movies.

As prophesised by the great Mayan scholars thousands of years ago, I have indeed fallen behind with my Sci-Fi September updates on here. I'm still very much watching the films (33 thus far!) but neither have had the time nor the energy to write much about them... as it stands I have watched 14 more films since my last update in the thread. Hopefully I'll be able to start commenting again towards the end of the month, but anyone who wants any of my thoughts on any of these feel free to ask and I will try to oblige. Here's the full list so far: Sep 1st: Invaders from Mars (1953) - 68/100 The Man from Planet X (1951) - 52/100 First Men in the Moon (1964) - 59/100 Sep 2nd: Track of the Moon Beast (1976) - 41/100 The People Who Own the Dark (1976) - 64/100 Sep 3rd: Attack of the Puppet People (1958) - 63/100 Phase IV (1974) - 72/100 The Invisible Woman (1940) - 62/100 Sep 4th: Prisoners of the Lost Universe (1983) - 38/100 Black Friday (1940) - 55/100 Sep 5th: The Road (2009) - 70/100 Bride of the Monster (1955) - 46/100 Sep 6th: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) - 69/100 Sep 7th: Deadly Eyes (1982) - 46/100 Watchers (1988) - 49/100 Sep 8th: The Creation of the Humanoids (1962) - 68/100 The Earth Dies Screaming (1964) - 67/100 Sep 9th: Barbarella (1968) - 69/100 Sep 10th: Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - 71/100 Sep 12th: Doomsday Machine (1972) - 51/100 Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) - 48/100 Sep 13th: Master of the World (1961) - 63/100 Sep 15th: Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) - 72/100 Upstream Color (2013) - 71/100 Westworld (1973) - 74/100 Sep 17th: Futureworld (1976) - 54/100 Sep 19th: The War Game (1965) - 90/100 Hard to Be a God (2013) - 84/100 Sep 20th: Trancers (1984) - 45/100 Computer Chess (2013) - 55/100 Sep 21st: Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) - 72/100 Bride of Re-Animator (1989) - 68/100 |

Glad you thought The War Game was excellent. 90 is a top score. Very chilling isn't it? Did you also like Culloden? |
