World Without End (1955)

Hugh Marlowe and his crew returning from a Mars mission end up caught in a time warp and catapulted to an earth in the 26th century. An earth devastated by the effects of nuclear war with the planets surface inhabited only by mutated creatures and mutant cave dwellers with the civilised humans forced to adapt to living in the subterranean underground. Something they do very well, even getting acclaimed pin-up artist Vargas to design their colourful costumes for them.

A fast paced film which is largely enjoyable but the longer it goes on the more it feels like a rehash of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, just not as good.

The Colony (2013)

Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton head the cast of this sci-fi horror thriller about a group of survivors living in underground facilities following the last ice age. Eeking out an existence they discover other survivors across the great chasm and head out to find them only to discover them dead at the hands of a band of cannibalistic mutants who pursue them back to their base as a fight for survival ensues.

Following a fairly run of the mill opening half hour this action thriller gets into it's stride. Fishburne is naturally heroic and Paxton does that slimy untrustworthiness act only he can do.

The film has quite high production values with good CGI which creates a very chilly snowbound environment and a set piece on a suspension bridge proves very suspenseful. Admittedly the film does fall into the 28 Days Later meets Doomsday trap in the final third as the real carnage erupts and there is a sense of having seen it all before, but on the whole The Colony is a pleasing enough time waster.

ALIEN OUTLAW - He's back! Lash LaRue returns for Phil Smoot's follow up to the equally obscure 'The Dark Power', and he's on whip-cracking form in this pile-up of sci-fi nonsense about rapey aliens who like to twirl their six-shooters in the sunny Californian hinterlands. It's supposed to be a parody, but they got the parody wrong, the result - constant bafflement. We may never know the secrets of the Diamond Talent Agency, nor the full extent of their 'momentous event'. We have this smeared trophy of grainy regional eightiesness instead.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Franklin J Schaffner's pioneering science fiction classic in which Charlton Heston and a team of astronauts land on a desolate planet where humans are dumb primitives and apes rule.

Heston is perfect as the rebellious human but it's the brilliant Kim Hunter who steals our hearts as she shines through her sublime ape make up showing compassion and humanity enough to make you forget she's a chimpanzee.

The script is clever as well as a rollicking adventure and the ending to anyone not in the know (Is there any such person) is both shocking, unforgettable and utterly awesome.

Back To The Future. 1985.

17 year old Marty is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time machine that was invented by his friend Doc Brown and accidentally changes things around and tries put things right..

The casting of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd is tremendous, both have on screen chemistry like a grandfather and son especially when in 1955 they are re-united like a long lost relative who is trying to run away from a responsibility and realising his inventions do eventually work. Still a great classic movie.

Back To The Future Part II. 1989.

Doc Brown, Marty and Marty's girlfriend Jennifer travel to 2015 to stop a family catastrophe but end up creating a new problem when they return to a alternate 1985 and have to right a wrong.

This one takes place right after the previous one ended and jumps right in with two different cast members, but the story is quite good on starting off in the present (1985) going to 2015 then back to 1955. Sequels do live up to the predecessor of the first film but this has it's moments of being daft but still a laugh seeing Strickland calling someone a slacker while firing a shotgun.

Back To The Future Part III. 1990.

Marty travels back to the wild west of Hillvalley of 1885 to bring back Doc Brown after seeing a tombstone of the Doc while almost changing the future.

This one starts off where part II finishes and Doc Brown believing his time travel theory worked sending Marty back to 1985 and Marty appearing from the future and then doing their experiments again to fix the De Lorean to time travel again. The pace for this one is a bit slower and covers Doc's love life, this does have the comical and laughter moments but it is a good sequel but not the best one for me, still a laugh to see Thomas F Wilson getting covered in manure.

Star Wars (1977)

A half baked space opera with lousy dialogue, white clad soldiers who can't aim to save their lives, a couple of twee robots, a wheezing villain and a space princess with bagels covering her ears and you get a film that will disappear into obscurity the moment it hits cinema screens.

A pity because parts of it are rather quite good.

Cube. 1997.

6 strangers from different walks of life wake up and find themselves in a giant cube full of rooms and try to escape without being killed.

See kiddies if you stuck at school and didn't think maths would help well this film shows you why you should learn that subject a great deal. There's an overall sense of creepiness, doom, and claustrophobia that overshadows the whole movie, not to mention the paranoia that sinks into both the characters. The actors are pretty much unknown back then but they really do their best to keep the film going and entertaining with great direction.

Velocity Trap. 1999.

A cop framed for a murder, is assigned to help transport $40 million and watch over a crew that in hyper sleep, when the ship is boarded by thieves and tries to divert the ship from from a comet.

For a late 90s B movie and given a bit of a budget that isn't tremendous but on a flip side this isn't that bad, ok it has it's moments of being daft but some funny quirks certainly brings it back up to being almost entertaining. Olivier Grunner plays the copper framed for a murder of a colleague is assigned to be the watchdog who thinks he is a ballet dancer and trying to clear his name against his boss Craig Wasson. It's not great but not terrible.

Interceptor Force. 1999.

A elite military team are sent to Mexico on a cover up mission only to find out that a U.F.O. had crashed down.

Someone had faith in this for it work with Ernie Hudson and Brad Dourif making a few appearances along with Glenn Plummer, William Zabka and Olivier Gunner. This isn't a great film but certainly beats half the shit I have watched (don't want to remember about the films of 2020). This is like a poor man's versions of The Thing and Predator with some quirks and laughs along the way to make it a bit more entertaining than what it should be.
