Been watching some Hartnell stories recently. One episode a night. I started with The Keys of Marinus which is a proper gem of a story with each episode set in a different area on the planet - Think Flux in the way it's constructed but unlike Flux this is done right. The final two episodes featuring Ian's trial are gripping viewing. The Romans came next. I absolutely love this story. It's use of humour that complements the drama is brilliantly done but it really isn't a comedy as many people suggest. Barbara (Jacqueline Hill) is unbelievably sexy in this. Finally The Time Meddler. A story that contains a number of firsts for Doctor Who, but works so well on it's own as a tale that contains Saxons, Vikings, electric toasters and more than one TARDIS. Peter Butterworth's monk is a lot of fun and a worthy foil for Hartnell's Doctor. Both The Time Meddler and The Romans are perfect blends of subtle humour and strong tightly directed drama. |

The Doctor had just began work on the sixth book - 'Doctor Who Discovers Historical Mysteries' - but the tome was left unfinished until a robot was sent by the publishers in the 64th century to forcefully remind the Fifth Doctor of his contractual obligation; the Doctor therefore resumed investigating the mystery of who killed the Princes in the Tower during the reign of King Richard III of England! In the course of the adventure William Shakespeare died in the century before his birth, which cause the robot's deadline circuit to malfunction. The robot then exploded. Unable to write about the truth of what happened to Richard and the princes in order to preserve the course of history, the Doctor suggested the possibility of investigating the historical mystery of Jack the Ripper instead. [This is featured in the Big Finish Productions audio story 'The Kingmaker']. FACTUAL: Published by Target Books between 1977-78, 'Doctor Who Discovers...' was a range of 5 educational books for children, covering real-world topics - Doctor Who Discovers Prehistoric Monsters, Doctor Who Discovers Space, Doctor Who Discovers Strange and Mysterious Creatures and Doctor Who Discovers the Conquerors The published books were very similar to Target’s Doctor Who Dinosaur Book which had appeared in 1976. Each one was a large (roughly A4-sized) slim 64-page paperback book and each volume also contained a fold-out poster of the cover art inside. The range was originally intended to be a long-running series, but was sadly curtailed at 5 books due to poor sales. The next three books in the series were already planned for late 1978, but were abruptly cancelled and never saw the light of day: Doctor Who Discovers The Miners, Doctor Who Discovers The Pirates and Doctor Who Discovers Inventors. The front and back covers of the Pirates book are illustrated below
