George Takei: Gay Sulu 'really unfortunate' - BBC News

I have a lot of time for George Takei, but I can't help thinking he is being narrow-minded in his thoughts over this

I honesly don't see the point of making Sulu gay.

It's supposed to be a tribute to George Takei, who is gay himself

Yes, I read that. And sorry, I still don't see the point of it. Perhaps we can also have Pine war a wig, in homage to Shatner. Both ideas serve no purpose.

I can see how he feels. Trek like Doctor Who was never a sexual show it doesn't and shouldn't be a part of it. Yes it was different seeing Kirk making it with green skinned aliens but thats as far as it needed to go.

I don't feel there is a need to go back to a character which is already rooted in the canon of the series and say, "oh he's this now". No matter how much the producers thought it was a nice nod to George it was unnecessary.

But wasn't 'Star Trek' given a reboot by the 2009 film, and as such, it's not a continuation of the original series anymore

Yes, and no, Sulu is still a canonical character in the series so it should stick to the rules.
