I'm a mere four episodes into Department S (1969/70). A cracking series about three agents of Interpol's classified but fictitious Department S which handles cases too weird for the regular guys. It's a brilliantly pacy series of stand alone stories starring Rosemary Nicols, Joel Fabiani and Peter Wyngarde as the marvelously moustached Jason King. Whilst everyone makes a decent stab at it, Department S is definitely Wingarde's show, his general airs and graces are so obviously an influence on Austin Powers even though he seems to be playing it straight, or as straight as Wyngarde could play it. As of the first four episodes the series is edging towards crime but with the fourth episode fantasy elements are beginning to take a hold which guarantees each episode will be something out of the ordinary. For those interested the Network dvd set looks great, the picture is sharp and colours are crisp. The new bluray sets should look terrific. I know after just the four stories this will be a hit with me and look forward to buying follow up series Jason King in the next Network sale. ![]() |

Because it's disappearing from Now TV today, I've been binge watching seasons 4-6 of Veep over the past four days or so. It's a hugely entertaining show with some instances where I wasn't sure whether art has imitated life or the other way around. The cast are uniformly excellent and the cinéma vérité style, which was used in The Thick of It, is perfect for this type of comedy. After I'd finished the latest season, I had a browse around what else was available and found something my brother had recommended: Tour de Pharmacy, a faux documentary about the 1982 Tour de France in which everyone is on drugs and, through various means, they ended up with very few people able to ride. It's from the guys behind The Lonely Island, and stars Andy Samberg, Orlando Bloom, Freddie Highmore, John Cena, Kevin Bacon, Lance Armstrong, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Danny Glover, Julia Ormond, Jeff Goldblum and many more household names. It's also very funny and highly recommended. I did finish the evening with the first two episodes in season five of Baywatch, which Demdike reviewed very well sometime ago. It's a two-part premiere which introduces Yasmine Bleeth as a regular cast member, has people in peril due to earthquakes, trapping them above and below water, slow motion montage rollerblading and (cringeworthy) music video sequences and is a great way to unwind before going to sleep.

Handicar is, in common with most South Park episodes in recent years, a wonderful mix of crude humour and social commentary, in this case lampooning the gig economy, how electric cars are failing to catch on in the US, and such things as Uber taking over from regular taxis. It's been a long time since I saw, but I remember absolutely loving the Wacky Races sequence.
