I've just watched a couple of episodes from 'The Comic Strip', and I can't get over just how young Ade and Rik look!

I watched Bottom for the first time - and found it a bit offensive | My London "I got about a minute into the first episode of Bottom and already found it offensive. But before I launch into my personal reflection on it though, it's important to make a few points about when Bottom was written and the purpose behind it. Bottom is a grim, slapstick comedy about two flatmates in West London. Written in the early nineties by comedy duo Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson, the whole point of Bottom is that its overtly rude and disgusting. You're meant to dislike both the characters. They're isolated odd balls that don't even really like each other. Sharing a dirty flat in Hammersmith, West London, Richie Richard and Eddie Hitler are social outcasts with no jobs and an obsession with girls. A lot of people will reflect on Bottom as a bit of a guilty pleasure with its comic violence and dirty jokes. But watching it in 2020 is quite hard. I'm not saying other people can't find it funny - each to their own - but there were just a few lines that went a bit far for me. With a lot more focus on inclusivity and diversity in the current age, I found some of the lines homophobic. You could go so far as to say it's sexist, but the joke was that Eddie and Richie can't get the "birds" as they call them, so that wasn't quite so offensive. Particularly problematic was the line "come back to my place and I'll cure you" which Richie says to a woman after finding out she's a lesbian. Since it was once believed that gay people could be 'cured', this seems in quite poor taste. The part where Richie does an impression of "a mere loony" was also quite offensive. Outside of this, there were some funny moments in that first episode that I watched. The part where Eddie comes back to the flat drunk made me smile. "What on earth are you eating?" Richie asks him. "Lard," came the response. It's disgusting but made me chuckle. Also the scene where the men spray pheromones over themselves to try to attract women then go out to the pub was amusing. Especially when Richie tries to waft his sent over various women and fails miserably. Mostly Bottom is very slapstick and overly grimy. If that's what you like in a comedy then you'd love it. There's a bit where one guy pours pints of oil right over his fry up. It's sickening. And one moment where Eddie is sick all over the other guy. Again, ew. There's actually lots of humour about the body. Like the bit where Richie is drawing curly hairs onto his chest - that was very odd. For all the parts I don't personally like, I can see how this would appeal to some senses of humour. It's crass and all about bodies and sex. But back in the day, there were other comedy shows of a similar style and people loved them. So all in all I think it's definitely of its time. I'm not saying you won't enjoy it if you like certain senses of humour, but I think a lot of people now would view it as old-fashioned. Luckily it hasn't stopped me appreciating Rik Mayall's incredible career. Give me The Young Ones and Blackadder any day."

Shock horror, stuff from long ago doesn't fit current morality. GROW UP. What would it think about Filthy, Rich & Catflap I wonder? Rather them than McIntryre anyday ....
