That's a nice tin. I got it too recently, thankfully I got it at a bargain price on Australian eBay, because I've seen it go for silly money here on the UK eBay. The soundtrack CD in the shape of Joe Spinnel's head was a nice touch! Love this movie, the Blue Underground BD is a must for me. |

MANIAC: The Bill Lustig and Savini Commentary is very entertaining, one of my favourites. The Joe Spinell and Caroline Munro scenes in Maniac are hilarious. The Clam restaurant scene has to be seen to be believed. I think Bill Lustig has since cut most of the Munro scenes out now though. I can understand why too. Jay Chattaways score is the best thing about Maniac. A great score. Joe Spinell was a fine actor, I really miss not seeing him poping up in these movies these days. I do prefer the Maniac Cop movies, over Manic though. They are much better movies, which were also directed by Bill Lustic. (More fantastic work by Chattaway!) Please post your thoughts on the new Maniac Blue-Ray, I may get a copy myself... Last edited by Mahoney32; 18th October 2010 at 05:55 PM. |

I also like the Maniac Cop movies, great fun. But Maniac is still a very interesting film, it's like a case study of a psychopath - no real explanations are given and his rationale is all over the place, but that's part of what it makes it all so intriguing. I'll definitely pick this up on BD - I have a soft spot for the film since it was one of the very first 'banned' movies I picked up on bootleg VHS back in the early 90's.

The only parts of Maniac that actually work, are the parts when the Maniac is alone. Lustic wrote the Caroline Munro scenes in, just to help get the film off the ground. Plus the main reason would be the fact that Munro's Husband invested most of the money to get the film made, in the first place. But like Lustig say's on the commentary, "She's a really lovely lady, and she's very pretty to look at". The scenes that feature Spinell and Munro together, are a joke. But oddly enough, those are some of the scenes that I like the most, as they make me chuckle every time. He was a funny guy Joe spinell. Every performance I've seen of his, I've really enjoyed. He was great in Cruising too, a very underrated movie, which starred Al Pacino... my favourite Maniac Cop film would be the second one, it defiantly surpasses the first. The prison siege at the end of the film is extremely entertaining, featuring yet another great score by Jay Chattaway, keeping the film moving. I haven't watched Maniac Cop 3 for some years now, but I remember being very disappointed by it, and not liking it very much. I would like to see that one again some time, to see whether or not my opinion has changed on the film... No Tom Atikins the second time round though Folk's.... I really enjoyed this, and it was a nice tribute to the late actor. This was a special feature on Anchor Bay's cut 2-disc edition, from a few years back. Blue-Underground's dvd may have it also, it probably is to be honest. Worth a watch if you get the chance... |
