Question Your Favourite Horror Film from 2002

2002 was a year for some decent horror films, but which one is your favourite? What makes it special to you? When did you first see it? Would you recommend it to the uninitiated?

Sometimes it's a hard decision to just pick one film (even when you're limiting it to a single year!), but my favourite film of 2002 is...

In My Skin - Marina de Van

Indy horror at it's finest, In My Skin is a shocking story of self-mutilation, which even though appears to be devoid of cognitive meaning at times, is actually very intelligently constructed. A stunning performance by Marina de Van (who also directs), In My Skin is a mesmerising and astounding piece of work.

Also, 2002 is possibly the first year that I've noticed some really crap, what I'd call 'popular' films, rearing their ugly heads. If the late 1990s were pretty dry in terms of horror, the early 2000s were the opposite. An oversaturation of terrible sequels, remakes, big studio flops, cheap straight to DVD affairs - well, in my eyes at least.

I think I can say that from 2002 onwards I became pretty jaded as a horror fan, and it marked the time where I started to become less and less interested in the newer more 'popular' horror movies, unlike previous decades where I regarded a lot of the more 'mainstream' favourites very highly.

My vote would go to THE EYE - Asian horror at it's absolute best

I have IN MY SKIN but haven't watched it yet.

That was my second choice, and I completely agree with you; a fantastic film and one that even tops the original Ring, for me.

Jason X , Dog Soldiers and Cabin Fever were all close choices. Never really thought of In my Skin as a horror, but it is really i guess. I do rate it, but its not one i regularly watch as its so depressing. I should try it on a double bill with the Piano Teacher, couldn't leave any sharp objects around though.

I pick the very underrated Fear dot com, not a popular choice, but i like it.

May is the winner for me - a minor masterpiece.

Bubba Ho-Tep is splendid too, and My Little Eye was an under-rated sleeper.

Irreversible is a controversial winner for me, it depends on what your definition of horror is I guess! Cabin Fever and The Eye would be runners up
