Bad Boy Bubby
A real Australian oddity from the early 90s, Bad Boy Bubby takes that quirky, slightly off kilter style that you find in even the most mainstream of Antipodean movies and runs with it, creating a bleak, sick and funny movie which may well appall some viewers but will find a home with horror fans who have a taste for the bizarre.
Bubby is a bad, bad boy. His mother has kept him locked away for 30 years, telling him that the air outside the family home is poisonous. Following a visit from his normally absent father, circumstances beyond Bubby's control force him into the world beyond the front door where he finds a society that is utterly confusing and finds him unacceptably odd...
This is a movie that seems hellbent on smashing as many taboos as possible. The story of a man with learning difficulties that also features incest, murder, extreme profanity and a general exploitation movie feel is always going to be a hard sell. But the film also has a certain charm and the central role is played with absolute commitment, making the movie hard to turn away from even when it starts to get really nasty. The film unsettles the viewer by swinging sharply between comedy and darkness, making this a compelling car crash of a film that anyone with a love of underground movies is going to appreciate.
Cat lovers beware, a stinking deceased pussy wrapped in clingfilm plays a pivotal role...
