Despite the bargain, I'm not buying hardbacks any more they take up so much space. Kindle books only for me these days unless it's a reference book or an art book ![]() I've never read any Sharpe books though, intrigued.

![]() The beauty of the Sharpe books now is if you've seen the tv series you can picture exactly how Sharpe and his men appear and these newer novels tend to slot in somewhere in between the tv episodes / previous novels. This one is at the end of the war and the series with the British about to leave Paris.

I'm currently in the final third of Richard Laymon's Blood Games. Another book ruined by flashbacks. The central story is fun with a group of young women staying at a supposedly deserted lodge in the woods. Basically classic backwoods horror. However there are whole chapters of back story from their college days that totally take you out of the main plot. I like Laymon's writing and it's easy to get into the college hijinks but any build up of tension is ruined and also arguably the horror takes you out of the girls former life. I think i'd have preferred this written linear. I'm not a fan of lengthy flashbacks in films so it's a no-no for me in prose form. |

The flashback chapters irritated me and interrupted the flow, one in particular just seemed extremely unnecessary. However come the end I did quite enjoy this book. Sent from my SM-G780G using Tapatalk |

Sometimes you have to call it a day and move on to something else.
