This is how i would look at it. I highly rate both directors.
Bava made very good films his whole career. There's not one i don't like that i've seen. Whereas Argento ran out of steam following
Opera (1987) and has made quite a few poor ones since.
However it can also be argued that Argento has been directing for a lot longer than Bava so it's entirely possible that his creativity has worn thin. There's also the small fact that there isn't much of an Italian film industry anymore especially for genre cinema so it's difficult to get finance for major productions. Bava on the other hand was arguably at the centre of Italian genre cinema throughout it's peak years and didn't have to face the struggles facing Dario in the 2000's.
