Which war was this set in? The Cold War doesn't count.

As I've mentioned, I'm not really a big fan of conventional/classic war films and actually may have seen a few others from your initial list as they were always doing the rounds on TV when I was young. There would be no way I'd be able to confirm from the titles alone though and would have to watch them again to know either way. I will add Kelly's Heroes and Where Eagles Dare to my Love Film list, although I will add that I'm sceptical as to whether I'll enjoy them or not - classic war is a lot like classic western for me =
The cast list of those two alone should make you want to watch them.

It doesn't? I have Dr. Strangelove, which is also set during the Cold War, in my 'conventional' war films list.

If it did then things like The Ipcress File and all the Cold War thrillers would count.

Leave it though as it could have been war on a catastrophic scale, luckily it wasn't. It's about the only one from that time that kind of counts.

Nah.

Flippancy aside though, unless it's someone I really loathe, cast rarely sways me in terms of what I watch, whether the film in question is from the classic era or the more modern one.

I was just thinking of films during wartime without any war, and I think Thirteen Days is a great movie, which I find compelling even though the outcome is known at the outset.

That's a film out of war time without any war.

Thinking about it I'm pretty sure Saving Private Ryan was the first proper war film i ever watched. And even that after it had been out about two or three years.

It fascinates me how many people have 'closed' or narrow areas of viewing.

I need films of all types in my collection. 3000 horror, sci-fi and Eureka's (Minus the war and westerns of course ) would bore me shitless.
