My collection is very varied to be honest but it doesn't feature a lot of war, i'm not against it as a story device but it's also not the first thing I think of.

According to the nifty collection tool over at bluray.com this is my collection

Strongly overrepresented: Coming of age, Film-Noir, Horror, Psychological thriller, Surreal, Teen
Overrepresented: Dark humor, Erotic, Foreign, Mystery, Supernatural
Underrepresented: Western
Strongly underrepresented: Animation, Other, Sport

'War' doesn't even feature

I was curious to see what 'Erotic' films I had in my collection mind you and was surprised with some of the films it come up with which might be erotic but not in a pure sense, such as Eyes Wide Shut and Bound.

I'm the same. I also feel my collections are quite varied but generally don't like enough War and Western films enough to want to own them - however, that said, I was surprised at how easy it was for me to do a top 10/20 of great 'war' films (albeit more unconventional ones).

I rent a lot too though via Love Film and am certainly not against watching stuff on Youtube and the like so these are useful tools to watch anything that may pique my curiosity but not have to go through the hassle and expense of buying (and then having to get rid of if I do dislike it). So from that perspective I guess my collections are slightly more stream-lined and tailored towards my core tastes rather than full of tat that I'd never want to watch again - like it has been in the past.

I'd still say I like a broad range of stuff though from silent films, experimental shorts, documentaries, crime thrillers, drama, horror, mysteries, thrillers, exploitation right through to modern blockbusters and comedies (although comedy is another funny one for me as my comedic tastes are very niche and eclectic and I find most mainstream comedy films to be abhorrent dreck). I'm also not put off by age, quality of materials and locale and could potentially watch a battered print of an Estonian drama from the 1940s quite happily. A lot of people (sadly) have issue with one or more of these criteria. A film's either 'too old', 'foreign' - and they don't want the hassle of sub-titles, or they refuse to watch anything unless it's some kind of gold standard immaculate print.

Hardly evenly distributed I know, but I make no apologies for where my core tastes lie and I certainly know what I like and what I don't.

I need films of all types in my collection. 3000 horror, sci-fi and Eureka's (Minus the war and westerns of course ) would bore me shitless.

Just a quick question for Justin and B_E would you have much trouble with a list of western films or would it be a no go.

I used to collect a bit of everything but im very selective these days its mostly horror that i pick up now and if there is a good blu ray release of some 80s action ill upgrade from dvd. Also i really only pick up blu rays now unless there is no alternative like with Shameless releases.

Hmm, I've seen a few and I even love a few, I could probably do it, but I'll tell you what right now The Searchers wouldn't be on it

I'd struggle, although I actually quite like struggling with these lists in some respects as it makes you think a bit more.

I've actually seen more conventional and classic westerns than I have war films (I think!), it's just that I've pretty much disliked most of them. Even some of the more violent spaghetti stuff has seen me less than enthralled.

I know you did. I had Crimson Tide in my other list too.

I think the submarine is more of a war device in the conventional sense thus making it more legit in this field than Kevin Costner stood around talking for three hours.

Just my opinion. Nordy's the thread boss.
