Top 10 British Films.

Withnail & I (1987)
Dracula (1958)
From Russia with Love (1963)
The Italian Job (1969)
The League of Gentlemen (1960)
The Devil Rides Out (1968)
Went the Day Well? (1942)
Deep End (1970)
School for Scoundrels (1960)
Borat (2006)
The Ladykillers (1955)

Damn that was tough. I had to go with 11 as i really didn't want to leave any out.

I could have easily produced a top 50 of quality British films as i've left so many out.

So if we did a top 10 British horror list then you'd leave Peeping Tom out?

Interesting

Damn - forgot Deep End!

I guess you could switch it for Moon

I've only seen it the single time but it's certainly stayed with me. I was wondering about The Duke of Burgundy too, even though i've only seen that the once. In fact BBS and Katalin Varga would also easily make a top 50

I think it auto-excluded itself from my search criteria what with the director Jerzy Skolimowski being Polish and IMDb listing it as a UK / West German co-production unfortunately.

I was going to list Berberian, but I class it as a psychological horror so intentionally excluded it.

Cor blimey, Guvnor. Top ten British films, eh? Well, that's a bloomin' turn up for the books, ain't it and no mistakin'

Right...here we go. The criteria I used for this list is:
i) As always, they must be films that I have in my collection
ii) No horror, science fiction or fantasy films
iii) As far as I'm aware, there are no co- productions here. They are all wholly British, which means I couldn't use titles like 'Rocky Horror' (which is UK/US) or 'Hot Fuzz' (which is UK/French/US)

1: Quadrophenia (1979) - Not only the best British film ever made, but also one of the best and grittiest films full stop. Very loosely based on the album by The Who, it's the story of the Mods and Rockers skirmishes of the 60's.

2: The Italian Job (1969) - As I have mentioned many times before, this is the quintessential 1960's British film. The epitome of 'Cool Britania'

3: A Night To Remember (1958) - The sinking of the Titanic. Proof that you do not need a multi-million dollar budget and a run time of three hours to tell a gripping and heartbreaking story. All you need is a good script and plenty of British stiff-upper lip

4: On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) - Probably a controversial choice for a Bond film, but I like it. It's gritty, realistic and doesn't have any of the camp, jokey elements that they series would soon fall into

5: Our Miss Fred (1972) - You know something? I don't have a single 'Carry On' film in my collection! However, this is a 'Carry On' in all but title. It ticks all the boxes: Smut - check; Innuendo - check; Female impersonation - check; Farce - check

6: A Hard Day's Night (1964) - The first Beatles film. Virtually plotless (the band have to get to London to appear on a television show) it's a non-stop cavalcade of hit music and funny jokes.

7: Tommy (1975) - The second Who inspired film, and third 'musical' on my list. Told entirely thru the music, the visually dazzling story features a host of big name artists (Daltrey, Townshend, Entwhistle, Moon, Clapton, Tina Turner, Elton John, Arthur Brown)... and some people who should NEVER be permitted to sing on films again (Moon [again], Ann-Margret, Oliver Reed, Jack Nicholson)

8: Bedazzled (1967) - An updating of the Faust legend with Pete and Dud. What are you expecting? A tasteful comedy?? Think again!

9: The Full Monty (1977) - Who'd have thought a film about a group of male strippers from Sheffield would be so entertaining? With a cast you care about and (again) a killer soundtrack this is a real feel good movie

10: Billy Elliot (2000) - See my comments for 'The Full Monty', but change Sheffield strippers for a County Durham ballet dancer

These 2 were very nearly on my list
