If you asked me again tomorrow then the list would probably be in a different order and slightly different in terms of what was included...

1. A Bittersweet Life (2005)
2. City of God (2003)
3. Infernal Affairs (2002)
4. White Heat (1949)
5. Massacre Gun (1967)
6. Youth of the Beast (1963)
7. Key Largo (1948)
8. Milano Calibro 9 (1972)
9. Scarface (1932)
10. The Italian Connection (1976)

I'm still working on my 'Love Story' top 10 – it's five times too big at the moment. In the meantime, these are the films which come to mind when I think of my favourite gangster movies:
  • The Godfather
  • The Godfather Part II
  • Goodfellas
  • Donnie Brasco
  • Once Upon a Time in America
  • Road to Perdition
  • Casino
  • Infernal Affairs trilogy (cheating, I know)
  • Gomorrah
  • Angels with Dirty faces

One small revision and a bit of a cheat, combining all three Godfather films and adding Miller's Crossing to my list.

  • Donnie Brasco
  • Once Upon a Time in America
  • Road to Perdition
  • Casino
  • Infernal Affairs trilogy
  • Gomorrah
  • Miller's Crossing
  • Angels with Dirty faces

Is that a gangster film? I've never considered to be one.

Nice to see some Seijun Suzuki appearing with titles like youth of the beast and tokyo drifter. I always saw these as more 'lone wolf' crime stories than gang pictures but after hearing of his passing realised I'd liked to have included at least one.
