Maybe everybody doesn't love the Shining as much as the best horror lists always make out.

Surprises me that Salem's lot is the top so far, maybe something to do with this scene scaring everybody shitless as a kid.

Creepy little floating bastard.

The reason I didn't add The Shining in my list is one I've said many times on here, it's a piss poor adaption of King's novel. It's a great film, one of my favourite horrors, but it's a Kubrick film starring Jack Nicholson playing Jack Nicholson, we already know he's crazy from the beginning, in the novel Jack Torrance slowly descends into madness as the novel progresses, and I'm pretty sure nobody read the book beforehand

The TV version is flawed, but it is a more faithful than Kubrick's film

My list is of films based on Stephen King's writings in order of how much I like them and doesn't account for how faithful they are to the source material.

So is mine, I don't see The Shining as a Stephen King film

I've only read the novel once, but have seen the film scores of times. The original material is by Stephen King so, as far as I'm concerned, that's what classifies it as suitable for this week's topic.

To be fair a lot of film adaptions don't resemble their origins much.
(ahem, Running mans on Riks list)

I'll just add that The Shining didn't make my top 10 because it's terrible.

That bloody screeching woman!

The last time we watched it, my other half was shouting at Jack to "bash her brains right the **** in" because of her annoying screeching

No wonder. Shelley Duvall completely ruins the film.
