In all honesty Waddell and Newman were correct first time round. The cannibal genre is a load of rubbish. Sure some of it is entertaining rubbish but they will never be good films.

If you thought that was good, you are most certain to find a great deal to appreciate in the Devil's Advocates one.

We'll never see eye to eye on this subject, Nos.
I don't dispute that it is exploitation, but I also think that just about every film (and book, music album etc.) says something about the people behind its creation and the society it represents and in which it was made. Examining those aspects and seeing what can be gleaned to offer the different interpretation on the finished product is something which I thought was fascinating when studying film academically.

Yeah, I like the majority of them, not entirely sure why, and own multiple copies of Holocaust and Ferox, but I'd never class them as good films, entertaining in parts yeah, but also pretty damn rubbish

Same can be said for a lot of the films that make up the bulk of discussions on here

I think what separates the cannibal ones from the rest of Italian exploitation is the forty minutes + of jungle wandering where nothing happens.

Films like Zombie Creeping Flesh are no better produced than the cannibal films but they keep the entertainment levels up constantly which is where the cannibal films fall down in my opinion.

CH is still for me a cut above the rest. The relentless negativity. The animal 'stuff'. That ending. From the first time I saw it, it's stayed with me. Boring? Respite is the word methinks Ferox is nastier in tone but its execution blunts the edge. Fcuk Srpski and the like. This is the shit. As I believe da kidz used to say 20 years ago

But then I class Brief Encounter as Extreme Cinema ... so what do I know?
Rik, keirarts and nosferatu42 like this.

Thanks everyone for your contributions in the last seven days. This week's topic is a bit different:

If you are unsure as to whether the film fits the topic, I am using this loose definition from Wikipedia:
"A home invasion is an illegal and usually forceful entry to an occupied, private dwelling with violent intent to commit a crime against the occupants."

I hope this will pre-emptively avoid any misunderstanding.
