With Halloween just around the corner, why go to the expense of paying £1 for some fake blood from a joke shop when you can spend £15 making your own!

The cinematic history of fake blood

If you just want the recipes without watching the video, two of them are pretty easy

1: The Grand Guignol recipe - a simple mix of glycerin, food colouring, and corn starch which is used to thicken the concoction. The important thing is the combination of food colouring that is used - Most of the colour comes from standard red, but also use a small amount of yellow to give it a very slight orange tint, and just a few drops of blue in order to darken the mix. Be careful not to use too much blue, however, as you risk turning everything purple!

2: Chocolate syrup - works well in black and white film-making, resulting in a highly dramatic and effective blood effect. Think the shower scene in 'Psycho'. A traditional fake blood recipe in a black and white shoot wouldn't work because the colour didn't register properly, and the blood ended up looking quite a bit lighter than you want

3: Kensington Gore, as used in the Hammer films

4: Dick Smith blood
