Default Confidential File: Horror Comic Books!

Confidential File: Horror Comic Books!
“A report by Paul Coates. Produced by Jim Peck. Directed by Irvin Kershner. Aired October 9, 1955. A KTTV Production, Los Angeles, for Times-Mirror.

In 1954 the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency conducted an investigation into how the comic book industry was supposedly contributing to the moral decay of a nation’s youth. The investigations were spurred on by a number of articles that blamed comics for the rise in juvenile delinquency in post-war America. Chief among the critics was Doctor Frederic Wertham, whose book, “Seduction of The Innocent” has been blamed for nearly single-handedly crippling the entire comics industry. “

Default The Hole in the Ground (1962

The Hole in the Ground (1962)
Lots of men in grey suits pointing at maps and wondering which way the nuclear wind will blow, riveting stuff.
An introduction to the service provided by the United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation, giving a demonstration of the operation of Britain's warning system for atomic war. A dramatisation of nuclear attack.

Years ago, I worked for the Benefits Agency in Hertford. Under the office was a nuclear bunker which was used to store old files. It was great, I'd spend hours wondering around it rather than doing work. The only problem with it, if a nuclear war should have started was the fact that it leaked when it rained!

I'd heartily recommend the BRITAIN BEWARE documentary with Adrian Edmundson! Excellent TV, and some truly disturbing and disquieting short films. The finest thing ITV has shown... in about 20 years. Which should give you an idea of a) how often ITV makes good shows, and b) how often I watch their channel!

For the uninformed those 'ol EC horror comics of the above decade were wickedly entertaining! Yours truly snapped up a few reprints back in the '90s and despite the visual violence the bad guys (and gals) always got their comeuppance so EC head honcho Bill Gaines certainly had his finger on the moral pulse. Evildoers got what they deserved everytime. I believe back in the '50s, one story even gave the reader the ingredients to concoct a very effective and very real poison! Needless to say, the '90s reissue blacked out all the relevant info.

Wertham didn't just vent his venom at horror titles either. He also considered Batman and Robin to be two Homosexuals living together at Wayne Manor!
