Home Alone

Good luck making a family film today where your 8 year old protagonist shoots an adult point blank in the face with an air rifle...

Watched Easy A last night.

Probably my film of the year, absolutely terrific.

I also saw 2001 Maniacs Field of Screams.

Quite enjoyable with a scene i am surprised got past the BBFC intact.

The sound was awful though, but this fact has been well documented, i just didn't know that beforehand.

My disc seems to be lacking Tim Sullivan's chat track.

"Sexual violence" taken literally, innit?

Greetings!

One of those shots that makes you rewind to be sure of what you just saw.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec

Just watched this with the missus.

I've always had a soft spot for Luc Besson's films, but this was really disappointing. It didn't help that the Jeunet-esque narration at the beginning convoluted the exposition unnecessarily, which made the proceeding story a hodge podge of CGI set pieces that were exceedingly underwhelming and all fairly pointless.
Lousie Bourgoin's portrayal of the titular character was hampered by poor writing and she went from being strong willed and funny to ill-tempered and spoilt, which made it quite hard to actually enjoy (although she is a very pretty lady).
Other characters were introduced and forgotten for great swathes of the film, even though the epilogue alludes to a particular nemesis of Blanc-Sec making a return.

I believe the characters, not sure about the story though, are based upon a comic book series and whilst this is the fodder of so many films these days, this is yet another example where it seemed that the source is probably a rich well of creativity and ideas, but sadly these notions just don't come across and translate well from the page to the screen.

Poor ol' Luc, should stick to writing and producing whip cracking b-movies a la Taken and The Transporter franchise.

Default What films have you seen recently?

I enjoyed ADELE BLANC SEC
not one of Besson's best films but very good nevertheless
but I really wish he would make another thriller like the brilliant NIKITA and LEON

The Fifth Element was the last film I enjoyed by him as a director.

I can't ever seeing him getting back to the likes of Leon or Nikita. His most recent is The Lady a biopic of Aung San Suu Kyi, the pro democracy activist from Burma - a strong female lead sure, but no trained assassin.

shame he's just really producing and writing but not directing the thrillers from years ago
enjoyed ANGEL-A a b+w fantasy, very good

I heard that he was only going to make/direct a certain number of films and then pack it in (maye Angel-A was the last one, not sure?).

I thought Angel-A was OK, but to be totally honest I can't remember much about it, in fact I was getting it confused in my mind with that black and white animated film set in a futuristic Paris, Renaissance.

I caught the tale end of one of those animated ones (Arthur...) over Xmas, but it looked fairly tedious - that being said it was in French and my mastery of the language leaves a lot to be desired.

Maybe he'll have a second wind in a few years and go thriller mad again
