Ended up watching the Brighton Rock remake for a second time last night. Liked it even less this time - the central relationship between Pinky and Rose is totally unconvincing, and the plotting has a contrived and rushed tv drama feel. I liked the effective rendering of 1960's Brighton, though the doom-laden choral score seems at odds with it. A disappointment on the whole . . .

Tarantula

Broke into my shiny new (BARGAIN!) Sci-Fi boxset and started with this. The effects were pleasingly obvious, but really well executed. My favourite was a scene early on where a scientist walks past his cages of giant animal experiments (including a massive guinea pig!). Top stuff, though the novelty wore off quite quickly. Think I was suckered by the poster (like the 1950s audiences probably), showing a town's population fleeing from the spider - that scene doesn't happen, and the lack of arachnid destruction was a bit of a disappointment . . .

Now that I’ve rewatched Suspiria, Inferno, and Mother of Tears in a row, here’s my short reevaluation of this Argento trilogy.

Suspiria. A great movie, but it needs getting used to. The film’s visual language is carried to extremes, with colours all around the place – I love Mario Bava’s work, so it’s easy to imagine that I also enjoyed the visual power of Suspiria. Goblin’s score is one of the most energetic of all times – it’s so intense that it sometimes drives you mad. Some people detest such ‘noisy’ scores, others like them if they fit in with the movie – with me belonging to the latter category. The story is only ornamental art – it’s about what you see and what you hear, not about what’s going on.
My favourite scene: the blind man’s death

Inferno. It had always been my favourite of this trilogy, and it’s still one if my three pet Argentos (along with The Bird With The Crystal Plumage and Deep Red). I love Keith Emerson’s score, and the visual language is still excessive, but less extreme than in Suspiria. The story is more compelling, and the whole mood is a lot darker and very eerie. All the young ladies (Miracle, Giorgi, Pieroni, and Nicolodi) look stunning, the great cast includes Alida Valli and Feodor Chaliapin, and Romano Alabanis cinematography is outstanding.
My favourite scene: the appearance of the female music student with the cat

Mother of Tears. To answer the most important question: is it as good as Suspiria or Inferno? My answer’s short and sweet: no. It has neither the visual persuasiveness of the first nor the mature and accurate direction of the latter. But, and that’s a big but… I’ve said it once, and I say it again: this is a very entertaining movie. It has a dark atmosphere, a nice pace, a convincing leading actress, and pretty good special effects. The score is not too remarkable, and some scenes (the appearance of Mandy’s mother’s ghost, for example, or the CGI-soaked final scenes) are a bit ridiculous and look cheap, that’s true. But it’s definitely a good Horror movie, and – believe it or not – i t does not deflate when watched directly after its two predecessors!
My favourite scene: the short staircase scene – classic Argento at his best!

Keep an eye on the “Post Your Favourite Movie Stills” thread, as I’m going to post Blu-ray stills of these three movies later today!

Greetings!

Sanctum. I just learned to swim this year after a fear of water that has kept me from the pool for twenty years. So I found myself holding my breath alot during this film A decent watch though.

I watched The Horde, one of three films i saw last night. I was really looking forward to it.
The first half an hour was well made and quite gripping, as was the final twenty minutes. However the middle forty minutes bored me to tears, objectionable characters shouting and swearing at each other constantly, with not one character for the viewer to identify or sympathise with.

Very disappointing really. Doubt i would watch it again.

The other two films if anyone is interested were Fast 5 and Hot Tub Time Machine - both far better than The Horde.

I also found The Horde rather poor. Very over-rated. Zombies by numbers - yawn.
