Ended up watching the Brighton Rock remake for a second time last night. Liked it even less this time - the central relationship between Pinky and Rose is totally unconvincing, and the plotting has a contrived and rushed tv drama feel. I liked the effective rendering of 1960's Brighton, though the doom-laden choral score seems at odds with it. A disappointment on the whole . . .

Tarantula Broke into my shiny new (BARGAIN!) Sci-Fi boxset and started with this. The effects were pleasingly obvious, but really well executed. My favourite was a scene early on where a scientist walks past his cages of giant animal experiments (including a massive guinea pig!). Top stuff, though the novelty wore off quite quickly. Think I was suckered by the poster (like the 1950s audiences probably), showing a town's population fleeing from the spider - that scene doesn't happen, and the lack of arachnid destruction was a bit of a disappointment . . .

I watched The Horde, one of three films i saw last night. I was really looking forward to it. The first half an hour was well made and quite gripping, as was the final twenty minutes. However the middle forty minutes bored me to tears, objectionable characters shouting and swearing at each other constantly, with not one character for the viewer to identify or sympathise with. Very disappointing really. Doubt i would watch it again. The other two films if anyone is interested were Fast 5 and Hot Tub Time Machine - both far better than The Horde. |
