My 5c on Cabin in the Woods. Awful, cliche ridden nonsense that has nothing new to say about the genre and shares similar plot elements to later Buffy episodes. I know I am in a very small minority, but I am in good company. Chris Fowlers review on his blog is spot on.

Re:View – ‘Cabin In The Woods’ « Christopher Fowler's Blog
that was the point, it was a sort of piss take of all horror movies that came before it, the eerie basement, the blonde girl, the jock, the stoner, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, it toke those cliches and played on them, like the blonde hair dye turns the girl into bimbo, the alcohol turns Thor, who is a philosophy major into the dumb jock. It takes the piss out of the entire genre and makes an entertaining, original film that i thought was utterly fantastic. Tucker and Dale did the same thing, although that should have got way more coverage than it did.

THE RAID. Bloody hell, this is impressive stuff and the best action film I've seen since John Woo's glory days of "The Killer", "A Better Tomorrow 2" and "Hard Boiled".

I thought The Nines was great!

Anyway, I watched Looper last night. Bugger me. One of the best films, if not the best film, I've seen this year. Sci-fi without the sillyness. In another director's hands, it could have been another Surrogates, but instead Rian Johnson makes a little masterpiece.

Aggression Scale - after being underwhelmed by Under the Bed I had decided to give this a miss, but the largely positive comments here made me rethink. I am glad I did, because once it gets going it turns out to be a great revenge flick. Recommended.

My copy of the Raid turned up this evening, but I will save it for the weekend. As was commented a few posts ago this is one of the best action films for a considerable time. I would probably agree that you have to go back as far as Woo's Hardboiled for a better action film - more than 20 years (Hardboiled happens to be the first film I went to see after I started University in London).

Deranged(1974)- The film by Alan Ormsby and Jeff Gillen, starring Roberts Blossom with FX created my the master himself, Tom Savini. It is the story of Ezra Cobb(Blossom) who after the death of his beloved, yet overpowering mother carries out many bizarre crimes such as grave robbing, stealing corpses from graves and eventually, murder. It is loosely based on real life serial killer Ed Gein and I must say that it is a fairly accurate account of his crimes(not quite as accurate as the eponymous Ed Gein film starring Steve Railsback) and a very enjoyable film too.
I first read about this film as a 12 year old boy whilst reading the August 1991 issue of The Dark Side magazine, which was kind of a TCM special and had a feature on Gein inside. Ever since then my interest in serial killers, particularly Ed Gein, grew and I now have numerous books on the subject. I can't believe it's taken me 21 years to finally see this film(thanks to a drunken bid on ebay).
Being the German 30th Anniversary Edition, it is the full uncut version which includes the infamous eyeball and brain scooping scene missing from MGM's double bill with Motel Hell and also features a behind the scenes doc with Savini commentary, a couple of pieces on Gein and various trailers. Also included is a 24 page booklet full of stills but with German text only unfortunately.

Roberts Blossom - From Deranged to Home Alone. Wonderful stuff, a classic horror and an all time favourite. Not to mention Escape from Alcatraz.
