Just watched Immortal (Ad Vitam). A really weird film that I hadn't seen in a few years. It was one of the first films to be filmed entirely against green screen. It also combines CG characters with real people (which looks really bad). It's a good, but flawed film.

Another couple of steps in clearing the back-log: Black Swan Darren Arfonsky continues to get better with each film, and his first film, Pi, already set a high benchmark. Black Swan is a masterpiece. At times it reminds me of one of my favourite films of all time (The Red Shoes) sharing not only ballet, but also the central theme of how far are we are prepared to go in the pursuit of greatness. Although, here Arfonsky takes us on a much darker journey into mental breakdown. An excellent film with a standout performance by Natalie Portman. Highly recommended. Diamonds are Forever I had forgotten that Connery returned to the role after Lazenby's stand-in turn. Here with his flabby midriff and greying hair we see why he would have been better staying away from the role. |

Rewatched Heavenly Creatures due to the interest in Peter Jackson, first 20 mins I was thinking it wasn't how I remembered it at all, considering I've not seen this film since VHS but it gradually got better and ended up being pretty gripping stuff, the tension building during 'the day of the happy event' was unbearable at some points. I really enjoyed it to be honest. Only critique about the direction really is Jackson tries a bit too hard at the start of the film to distance himself from his horror past and ends up coming across as a Spielberg try hard. As the tone gets darker he comes into his own even if he tries to rip off Suspiria/Inferno with his lighting and camera angles.
